What many are familiar with from whitewater river rafting is offered as tidal rafting in Nova Scotia. A motorized rubber boat takes you out onto the water. Strong tides in the Bay of Fundy cause waves to rise and fall. Passengers equipped with life jackets splashed quite wet. The tides range up to 15 meters and cause particularly strong waves.
Fly: The Bay of Fundy can also be explored by canoe. But watch out: The weather changes quickly between fog and sunny clear skies.
Cape Breton island is located in the north of the Nova Scotia peninsula and can be reached by a bridge. The highlight is a road trip on the Cabot Trail, where there is so much to explore: empty beaches and beautiful coves to explore by kayak. The road leads high along the coast. A tour stop is always helpful to explore the area on foot. It is recommended to take at least two to five days for the entire course.
Fly: One of the most scenic hiking trails in Cape Breton is the Skyline Trail at Pleasant Bay. The circular route is 7.5 kilometers long and is especially worth seeing at sunset.
About 30 kilometers southwest of the capital city of Halifax is Peggy’s Cove, a small fishing village. It was founded in 1811 and was originally settled by six families. To this day, the inhabitants live here in a very traditional way, mainly fishing. Lobsters are particularly popular here and are an important part of Nova Scotia culture. A boat trip for the scenery is also worthwhile. The tours offer, among other things, a beautiful view of the Peggy’s Cove lighthouse.
Fly: A lobster tour takes you to the sea in a fishing boat. Not for the faint of heart, but water lovers and lobster is a lot of fun to taste.
The small town of Lunenburg looks like it came straight out of a postcard. The view of the colorful houses from the water is reminiscent of landscapes from northern Germany. The promenade and fishing museum are especially worth a visit. Here is a monument commemorating, among other things, all the brave fishermen who risked their lives fishing in the rugged Atlantic. Lobster tastes even better when you learn to understand what museum fishing entails. The town has cafes and restaurants serving traditional lobster dishes. Fresh catch is also for sale in the beautiful fishing community of Blue Rocks.
Fly: The golf course at one end of the bay offers a particularly beautiful view of the city and the water. It’s the perfect place to make some holiday memories, especially at sunset.
A special highlight in Cape Breton is the small town of Baddeck am See. The summer home of Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, was here. The museum named after him not only houses the famous phone he revolutionized communication. Bell had many other ideas that had a lasting impact on the course of the story. Among other things, he was a member of the aviation team that successfully made the first flight in the Commonwealth of Nations. They flew a full kilometer, which was quite a feat at the time.
Fly: It is worth taking a walk in the fresh air after visiting the museum. There was good reason why Bell chose to spend his summers in the picturesque area of Baddeck.
The capital of Nova Scotia is Halifax. If you want to spend a few days in the city, you will find ideal accommodation offers in one of the beachfront accommodation. Most of the city’s main attractions are also located here. This includes, for example, the Immigration Museum at Pier 21. Between 1928 and 1971, more than a million immigrants came here to start a new life in Canada.
Fly: After visiting the museum, taking a walk or a short bike ride around the harbor is just the right thing to do. The promenade runs along one of the deepest and largest natural harbors in the world. There are many shops and restaurants overlooking the water.
The brewery was founded in 1820 and is one of the oldest breweries in North America. While touring the building with its wide brick corridors, visitors learn a lot about the art of brewing. The brewery is named after Alexander Keith, then Mayor of Halifax. The house is no longer actively brewing. Beer is free to try.
Fly: Other breweries in Nova Scotia are also worth a visit. For example, the Glenora Whiskey Distillery with an associated guesthouse.
Visitors can board a boat from Halifax Harbor to Georges Island in about five to ten minutes. The historic site is one of five that make up the Halifax Defense Complex. They served as military bases for British and Canadian soldiers during the Commonwealth. Over 200 years, various buildings, corridors and ramparts were built to protect the city.
Fly: The hills on Georges Island are not only historically worth seeing, but are also popular for picnicking. Families love to come here to dine together and enjoy the harbor view.
