“Luther”: Will Idris Elba Be Netflix’s New Secret Agent After “The Fallen Sun”?

DCI John Luther is back and solves a thrilling, initially hopeless case in the Netflix movie “Luther: The Fallen Sun.” And while the London cop is still his old self (even his wool coat and red tie are still part of the game), the Netflix movie differs from the series in a few ways. And of course all ‘Luther’ fans ask themselves one question: what next?

The BBC series “Luther” started in 2010 and now has five seasons. Until the 2019 finale, it was actually always clear that the series could get a sequel. When it comes to film, it often looks very different and “The Fallen Sun” has a well-rounded conclusion. Or not?

Will Luther: The Fallen Sun continue on Netflix?

In order to not only pick up die-hard “Luther” fans with “The Fallen Sun”, but also attract new viewers*, Netflix has “adjusted” the end of the series a bit to the beginning of the film. You can read what this looks like and whether it worked here:

So Netflix tweaked Luther’s backstory a bit to reach a wider audience and make the movie’s plot more understandable, and so far it’s working well. And yet the beginning of The Fallen Sun can be a problem when it comes to other Luther movies on Netflix

+++ Warning, spoilers! +++

DCI Luther (Idris Elba) is serving time in prison at the beginning of the Netflix movie. We remember: Luther used rather unconventional methods to track down and lock up criminals – not to mention his connections to the London Underground. Even though Luther is a great policeman, his prison sentence is probably legally correct.

Over the course of the film, Luther breaks free to find a serial killer and avenge numerous murder victims. Successfully. And even if it doesn’t seem like it at first, he survived and probably saved countless lives. But really, after his crimes, he should go back to prison and start another “Luther” movie with an outburst would probably be pretty absurd.

Next stop: Secret Service!?

But the movie actually ends with a very interesting cliffhanger. Luther is taken to a safe house and Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley), his former boss, hints that a Secret Service job might be waiting for him. Meanwhile, numerous black limousines drive to the hideout and a man in a suit gets out of one of the cars and explains that “the boss” would like to see Luther.

We can’t find out who exactly is in charge. However, it is quite likely that he is the head of Britain’s foreign or domestic intelligence (either MI6 or MI5).. So Luther would almost certainly get an important new job – and then nothing stands in the way of further “Luther” movies on Netflix. Who knows, actor Idris Elba will become a kind of James Bond after all. After all, he certainly won’t follow in Daniel Craig’s footsteps, as you can read here:
