Specifically, the more urban the location, the less spiders and bowtails there are, according to the study. The researchers conclude that wingless groups in particular are at a disadvantage. In contrast, the number of different fly species is increasing in more urbanized areas, suggesting that they are better at closing distances between isolated green spaces.
The researchers also observed that with increasing urbanization, there are fewer web-making spiders, but more actively preying on spiders such as crab spiders and walking spiders. There is a clear link between the degree of urbanization and the hunting behavior of spiders.
“Urbanization is particularly likely to favor herbivorous species,” the researchers wrote in the study. For example, aphids, book aphids, mosquitoes, flies and aphids were seen at higher frequencies in more urbanized areas.
In the study, the researchers examined an area of 57 square kilometers in and around Innsbruck. They showed that arthropod abundance was about 30 percent higher in less urbanized areas than in densely urbanized areas.
