US researchers find dinosaurs with longest neck

According to researchers at Stony Brook University in New York, it has set a new record for the neck length of dinosaurs. According to this, the dinosaur species Mamenchisaurus sinocanadorum, which is common in today’s East Asia and other parts of the world, had a neck length of more than 15 meters. According to the researchers, this is equivalent to six giraffe necks!

The animal’s fossil remains were discovered in 1987 in China. They lived more than 160 million years ago and belonged to the sauropod group.

Although very few dinosaur bones are known, researchers have now been able to reconstruct the animals’ sizes and shapes using the complete skeletons of their closest relatives. They found the enormous neck length that surpassed all previously known dinosaurs.

“At 15 meters long, Mamenchisaurus sinocanadorum appears to be the record holder—at least until something longer is discovered,” said paleontologist Andrew J. Moore of Stony Brook University, PA.

Using computed tomography, the scientists were able to find that the vertebrae of giants are hollow, as is the case with small birds. The animals had four-meter-long ribs on their necks that provided stability. The findings will now be published in the “Journal of Systematic Paleontology.”
