Four coastal sea research projects are presented

Doctors Kathia Broce and Gisselle Guerra, both scientists from the Hydraulic and Hydrotechnical Research Center (CIHH) of the Technological University of Panama (UTP) affiliated with the Center for Multidisciplinary Studies in Science, Engineering and Technology (CEMCIT AIP), will be in charge of four coastal sea research projects .

Scientists are together with collaborators students and researchers international organizations will study hydrodynamic processes in the coastal marine areas of Panama.

These research projects answer four of the Goals of sustainable development, namely: gender equality (SDG5), water quality (SDG6), climate action (SDG13) and underwater life (SDG14).

– Project IDDS22-16 “Diagnostics Coastal zones for the report on indicators for SDG 14 (Life under water)”:

Led by Dr. Kathia Broca, this research seeks ccontribute to the generation information for the report on the indicators of Sustainable Development Goal 14 “Underwater Life”.

The Panamanian scientist and his team of co-researchers will conduct periodic monitoring and chemical analysis of Panamanian coastal waters to assess ocean acidification, marine heavy metal contamination, nutrient contamination, full-scale pH measurements, and measurements of variables such as salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen , organic matter, among others IDDS22-16 Project “Diagnostics of Coastal Areas for Reporting Indicators for SDG 14 (Underwater Life)”:

– Project IDDS22-18 “Condition assessment erosion on the line Panama’s Pacific Coast”:

With this project of investigation, It seeks to define a methodology to explain the phenomenon of coastal erosion in the Panamanian Pacific. Coastal erosion is an element that affects sensitivity to climate change.

– Project IDDS22-34 “Condition assessment saline intrusion limit in the estuaries of the RAMSAR area – Bahía de Panamá”:

The research is led by Dr. Guerra, who, together with her co-researchers, will measure salinity and water level parameters for a year in the estuaries located in the Bahía Panama Ramsar site.

– Project FIED22-07 “Determining the level salinity and water quality in sources of water for human consumption”:

This research project, conducted by Dr. Guerra with the support of her co-researchersseeks to find out the extent of saltwater intrusion in the urban basins of Panama.
