Will there be a “Stab” spin-off? Have you been aiming for an FSK 18 for “Scream 6”? The big FILMSTARTS interview with the directors of “Scream VI”!

Since last Thursday, the cult killer in “Scream 6” Ghostface has been up to mischief again – for the first time in New York and for the first time in 3D! By the way, who’s behind the mask this time around also came as quite a surprise to “Ready Or Not” directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – because as we learn in the duo’s interview, they themselves don’t want anything new. ideas or even know the story until the script is done!

Our questions about possible plans for “Scream 7” have become superfluous – because a possible sequel is apparently entirely in the hands of the authoring duo James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. But that doesn’t mean us didn’t get much out of the two – for example about their spinoff wishes, the somewhat surprising FSK 18 rating, and the influence of James Cameron’s “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” on “Scream VI”:

MOVIE BEGINS:

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin: No, we got the script from James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick – and by then it was New York. That was also the point where we realized that the new movie will be different and we can take some risks as well.

MOVIE BEGINS:

TylerGillet: No idea. But that’s the beauty of this franchise, you can go anywhere…

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin: … to Paris …

Tyler Gillett: … yeah, I was just about to say they’re working on a “Scream 7” in the vein of “The Way Of The Water” (laughs)

MOVIE BEGINS:

TylerGillet: That’s for sure. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick are always thinking about where the next part might go. But we don’t know about it and we want it that way, we want to be as surprised as the audience with what ideas the two will come up with next.

MOVIE BEGINS:

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin: We used to joke about it, and now we honestly believe that a Stab spin-off could be great.

TylerGillet: So basically the “Stab” version of “Scream 6” – just a full pot of grindhouse style. But the great thing about the ‘Scream’ movies, at least if we’ve done our job right, is the interaction between the characters. You could do it as a spin-off, of course, but there’s a special magic to them all appearing together in a movie.

MOVIE BEGINS:

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin (suddenly wide-eyed): Christina Carpenter? Yes, she is often mentioned. We don’t have any immediate plans, but we love the fanfiction version of her, regardless of what theories people have formed around the character. Let’s see if “Scream 7” still performs.

MOVIE BEGINS:

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin: No. It’s our second movie with Jenny – and we’ve loved her from the moment we met her. It’s just amazing to see her achieve all this success.

TylerGillet: It’s always nice when good people get the recognition they deserve.

MOVIE BEGINS: “Scream 6” is now the first part of the series in 3D. How important was the fact that you knew that “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” would hit theaters a few months early and could give the technology a whole new boost?

TylerGillet: We definitely stuck with Avatar 2. That was always part of the conversation when we decided to do 3D. We also knew that James Cameron would once again revolutionize the 3D experience in such a way that the technology in cinemas is very well calibrated afterwards. Particularly technically taking advantage of this preparatory work, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. We have already done a test with “Scream 5”, but it did not work there for several reasons. But just seeing the test and now the whole movie in 3D is an exciting experience. It’s the same movie but with an extra layer of magic. We are very impressed with what came out in the end.

MOVIE BEGINS:

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin: Yes, “next level shit”, that’s the motto of this movie! But no, I didn’t know that. What releases did the intermediate parts get?

MOVIE BEGINS:

TylerGillet: Interesting. There’s a fair mix of reviews for “Scream 6” internationally – and it’s a lot of fun finding out what different cultures and places consider particularly brutal or subversive.

MOVIE BEGINS:

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin: Oh man, you just about cornered us (laughs).

TylerGillet: Kevin Williamson (Editor’s Note: ) would be a very nice twist (laughs). Very meta.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin: Yes, I like that, I steal his answer.

MOVIE BEGINS:

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin: It’s nice, you’re having a good time. We really tried to make Scream 6 a movie that has everything we love about going to the cinema.

TylerGillet: We’ve probably seen the film in post-production a few hundred times now – and we’re still enjoying it and now we hope others will feel the same way…

“Scream VI” has been running in German cinemas since March 9. In the latest episode of our weekly cinema podcast, on screen love, we’ve already covered the sixth installment of the slasher saga in detail – and you’re welcome to listen right here:
