In the Andy Serkis reveals how fondly he thinks back on the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy: “Middle-earth never leaves me,” he says. He also shows enthusiasm for the recently announced new movies: “I think there are so many other potential Middle-earth projects to come.”
Serkis also states that he would “of course jump at the chance” to be part of it if one condition is met: Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens must also be involved again. The trio produced the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, with Jackson also directing the films.
“Lord of the Rings” comeback by Andy Serkis – not so unlikely?
Serkis’ wish is not that unlikely. Announcing the new films, it was revealed that Warner is in talks with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. The plan makes it clear that the trio is somehow involved. Finally, Jackson says, “We look forward to having further conversations with them to hear their views on the future of the franchise.”
So there’s a lot right now to suggest that the new movies will also be set in the same world as Jackson’s previous installments and not remakes, but prequels, sequels or spin-offs. But that hasn’t been confirmed yet.
And there would definitely be a place for Serkis too – even if his iconic character Gollum doesn’t return. After all, as a motion capture specialist, he could also embody another fantasy creature. And Serkis is also in demand as a “regular” actor, he recently starred in the “Star Wars” series “Andor” and can be seen on Netflix from today in “Luther: The Fallen Sun” as a cunning villain.
Serkis could also play a role behind the camera. He already played an important role as a second unit director in “The Hobbit” trilogy. In a film production, the second unit usually shoots additional scenes such as landscape shots, stunt scenes or large crowd scenes with many extras in parallel with the so-called first unit, which works with the stars. In addition, Serkis has used the experience to direct himself as lead director – most recently the Marvel movie “Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage”.
However, no schedule for the new ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies has been released yet. First of all, fans can eagerly await what kind of movies are coming. As soon as things become more concrete, Warner’s officials will know after the statements in the now that Andy Serkis picks up the phone when they call.
