Which island type are you?

class=”sc-97fd9fa8-0 jNFKxv”>

Moonscapes, black and white beaches, green waters, huge volcanoes, canyons, renewable energies, waterfalls or rather steep waves? The seven main islands of the Canary Islands have their own character, just like their visitors.

Grand Canary –

Although Gran Canaria is only 50 kilometers in diameter, the island has an enormous wealth of landscapes and unique vegetation. The capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is as diverse and contrasting as the island itself. Anyone wishing to escape the foggy autumn or the cold winter will find ideal conditions for a mild holiday in Gran Canaria after just four and a half hours of flight. Temperatures around 20 degrees from December to February are pleasant on the island.

La Palma – for hikers

It is also called the green island: La Palma is characterized by a rugged landscape filled with volcanoes, gorges, waterfalls and streams. As the island has the wettest of the Canary Islands, waterproof clothing is a must in your suitcase, as well as hiking boots.

Tenerife – for active vacationers

There’s always something going on in the largest of the Canary Islands with over two million visitors a year. But there are also quiet and mystical places: In the southern half of the island, Spain’s highest mountain, Pico del Teide, enthrones at 3718 meters with a lava desert witnessing volcanic activity. The national park has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2007. A very special energy can be found under the over 500-year-old dragon tree, 17 meters high, of Icod de los Vinos in the north. Also worth seeing is the steep Los Gigantes beach to the west. If you also like to surf, El Médano is for you!

La Gomera – for the lonely

Breath! There is no tourist flow here. On the contrary: The second smallest Canary Island boasts lots of nature and wilderness: Garajonay National Park is a European bird sanctuary. It covers ten percent of the island and, like Silbo Gomero’s whistleblower, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition to the beautiful laurel forests, there are unsurprisingly numerous bird species. Be sure to visit the municipality of Valle Gran Rey with its palm valley and the magnificent basalt cliffs of Los Órganos. This is also one of the few beaches on the island.

Lanzarote – for nature lovers

Rest and relaxation – these are two terms used for Lanzarote. The basalt stone island with its black beaches amazes with beautiful, light and fine sandy coves between them. The “dream” beach is called Playa de Papagayo – dip your feet in the powdery white sands before diving into the beautiful, clear green water here. You should definitely visit the Green Lagoon and the famous Timanfaya National Park with the Fire Mountains. A little wine is also a must: Lanzarote’s oldest wine bar is located in the south.

Fuerteventura – for athletes and beach lovers

The wind is a ubiquitous guest in Fuerteventura. This is especially popular with intrepid surfers who can prove their skills in “European Hawaii”. They prefer to do this in the high waves at Punta de la Tiñosa in the north of the island. Hiking is slower in the Parque Natural nature reserve on Jandía’s southern peninsula. With its 150 km long sandy beach on the Atlantic coast, 300 days of sun and turquoise blue sea, Fuerteventura is also a bathing paradise.

El Hierro – for sustainability

Finally: El Hierro is the smallest island of the Canary Islands and offers many natural swimming facilities and coves. Just like La Gomera, it can only be reached by island plane or by ship from a neighboring island. When it comes to sustainability, El Hierro is way ahead of the pack as it delivers 100 percent renewable energies and regional products from a hydro-wind power plant. Peace seekers and nature lovers really get their money’s worth here!
