Not only did Steven Spielberg get the biggest blockbuster of the year with “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” in 1989, but also gave us one of the best adventure movies of all time with the third Indy adventure – which not only thrilled at the time, but is still downright frenetic today is celebrated. While the Hunt for the Holy Grail climbed to No. 3 in Germany’s annual cinema charts, another Spielberg movie that many didn’t even notice crash-landed – and didn’t even make the top 100 in this country (!) from 1989: “Always”.
The flying adventure, which is typical of Spielberg and comes with a lot of star power, remains one of the least known films from the legendary director to this day. This becomes apparent not only when viewing various movie rating platforms, where “Always” has one of the fewest votes, but also in the home theater, where the film has been treated rather neglectfully until now. The latest news is all the more gratifying: “Always” will be re-released on Blu-ray on May 25, 2023, finally returning to retail!
The film celebrated its Blu-ray premiere in 2015 and was also part of the “Steven Spielberg Director’s Collection” – but both versions have practically disappeared from store shelves and have been barely available (except on the secondary market) for some time. Now PLAION PICTURES has finally found a cure and releases the Spielberg classic from the second series in an edition that does it justice: as an elegant media book including DVD and Blu-ray.
Fantasy Romance With a Superstar Cast: This Is “Always”
Always, a late 1980s remake of the 1943 classic Battle in the Clouds, tells the story of firefighter pilot Pete Sandich (Richard Dreyfuss) who loves his job, but loves his girlfriend Dorinda (Holly Hunter) even more. And because she fears for his life every time he takes to the skies for a rescue mission, he decides to end his time in the cockpit. A decision that unfortunately comes too late:
Ironically, on his last flight, the great tragedy Dorinda had always feared happened: Pete died. But his mind is not going to rest just yet. As a guardian angel, he accompanies the young pilot Ted Baker (Brad Johnson), who not only follows in Pete’s footsteps as a rescue pilot, but also quickly falls for his great love Dorinda…
The kite adventure, also known in this country as “Always – The Fire Angel of Montana”. a must for all hopeless romantics and of course Steven Spielberg fans – and there should be plenty of people in both camps who can now fill this gap thanks to the upcoming home theater remake. For those who prefer streaming, the film is of course also available as video-on-demand:
The film lives mainly on the great romance (or of the two romances) and on Steven Spielberg’s irrepressible appetite for adventure and joy of staging. which appear in almost all of his films – sometimes more, sometimes less. And then, of course, there’s the renowned, versatile all-star cast, which alone would be reason enough to put “Always” on the watch list:
In addition to Richard Dreyfuss, who completed his Spielberg trilogy with “Always” after “Jaws” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” Oscar winner Holly Hunter (for “The Piano”) and Brad Johnson are also Hollywood fans such as Keith David ( “The Thing From Another World”), John Goodman (“Argo”) and Breakfast at Tiffany’s icon Audrey Hepburn were in attendance.
