Our travel advisor has taken a closer look at the Greek island for you: Read her report on everything there is to experience and discover!
We start at Porto Timoni Beach which is also nice butterfly bay is called. Why Butterfly Bay? The headland protrudes into the turquoise sea on both sides, forming two bays. The natural spectacle resembles a butterfly from above – beautiful! For the short 30 minute walk to the beach I recommend swapping your flip flops for sneakers as the path is quite rocky and steep. When you get to the beach, you’ve earned a dip in the refreshing, crystal-clear water.
Bathing is known to make you hungry. My tip against a growling stomach: Porto Timoni restaurant. The restaurant has a beautiful location on a hill, which gives you a beautiful view of Georgios beach. We ordered delicious souvlaki and a freshly squeezed orange juice. The food tasted excellent, the service was very friendly and the view was magnificent.
Incidentally, souvlaki (translated skewers) is a Greek grill dish and simply delicious.
The city is best known for the old and new Venetian fortresses and for the St. Spyridon Church. The fortifications can normally be visited but due to Covid-19 they were closed when we were there. Our alternative program: strolling through the streets and shopping for a few small things.
When you’ve got all the presents for those at home and a nice holiday memory for yourself, it’s time to go to a nice restaurant. In Corfu Town you are spoiled for choice. The scope of invite Greek taverns is huge and the food tastes incredibly delicious everywhere – so always follow your nose!
Outside Corfu town (about 4 km) you will find a beautiful windmill, a great subject for a souvenir photo from your Corfu vacation. The windmills are typical for Greece, otherwise very common on the islands of the Cyclades. They are witnesses of times gone by and stand for culture and tradition today. A Greece photo with, in front of or of this typical photo subject should not be missing.
According to a legend, lovers who “Canal d’Amour” swim through it together, stay happy together forever. Well, do you dare? The seaside town Sidari is worth a visit not only because of the legend. The view over the sea is breathtaking.
The Church of Vlacherna is located on a small rocky island, which is connected by a short causeway. The church is located right next to the Kanoni flight path, Corfu Airport’s only runway. The church is the landmark of Corfu and is therefore on many postcards. In addition, the church was made famous by the Bond film “James Bond 007 – For Your Eyes Only” in 1981.
Imperial throne above Pelekas is well worth a stop as there is one vantage point, which gives a 360° all-round view over the island and far out to sea. The German Emperor Wilhelm II is said to have sat here and watched the sun set – hence the name of the truly beautiful place. There are also enough parking spaces available for your rental car and it is even free.
I recommend a second stop in town Pelekas. There are some romantic restaurants to discover in this charming town. First enjoy a nice moussaka and then watch the sunset or vice versa.
If you are in the region Paleokastritsa You absolutely must stop Rent a boat and explore the countless bays. The azure blue water glistens so beautifully that you want to jump right in. You do not need a boat inspection or the like for these 20 hp boats either. My favorite place, which we visited by boat, was without a doubt this one Kastelli Beach. The beach consists of white, smooth stones and makes the water shimmer very light blue. Don’t forget your snorkeling equipment, because schools of fish swim around here.
Back on land, charming restaurants await you in Paleokastritsa. my personal Restaurant tip for you is the «Yialos Beach Tavern». There are good things here Gyros at an affordable price. During the meal you can enjoy the view of the Agios Spyridon Bay as well as the Monastery of Paleokastritsa high on the mountain.
This is what awaits you on the northwestern tip of the island Natural spectacle Cape Drastis. The view of the picturesque limestone formations is amazing. If you have sturdy shoes I recommend the walk to the cape (about 30 minutes) and then you have the opportunity to cool off in the bay. Boat trips to Sidari (Canal d’Amour) are also offered from here.
Another photo spot that I don’t want to keep from you is the spectacular one rock cliff at Loggas Beach. Nearby is the 7th Heaven Bar, a modern bar with swings to sit on and a skywalk. Really cool place to watch the sun go down with a drink.
Corfu is a dreamy and very diverse island, which has a lot to offer for explorers and Greece fans. I haven’t seen everything yet. On my next trip to Corfu I will definitely visit Achilleion, the palace of Empress Sissi, and climb Pantokrator, the highest mountain in Corfu.
With this in mind: See you soon Corfu, see you soon dear travel friends.
