Committed $20 billion to protect the seas

As stated in the statement at the end of the two-day meeting Saturday night (local time), the US government alone has pledged nearly six billion dollars for 77 projects. John Kerry, the US special envoy for climate issues, announced investments in marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries and renewable energies, among other things.

The EU, on the other hand, wants to increase spending on the world’s oceans to 816.5 million euros in 2023. The host country Panama has announced that it will nearly double the size of its marine protected areas. In the future, more than 54 percent of the country’s exclusive economic zone will be protected. This region extends from the coast of a country to the sea for 200 nautical miles. There, states have special rights under the law of the sea, such as exclusive fishing rights and rights to exploit natural resources.

Among other things, the United States committed nearly six billion dollars to the protection of the seas on Thursday this year. The money will be distributed to 77 offshore projects.

At the international conference “Our Ocean”, governments, private sector, organizations and civil society representatives from 70 countries discussed how to protect the world’s oceans.
