American guitarist and songwriter Gary Rossington died on Sunday. Legendary American rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd confirmed this on their Facebook page. Songs like “Sweet Home Alabama” (1974) and “What’s Your Name” (1977) made the group from Jacksonville, Florida world famous.
“It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we must announce that today we have lost our brother, friend, relative, songwriter and guitarist Gary Rossington,” the group said. Rossington was 71 years old, US media reported. A band manager confirmed the death to the Washington Post. Ken Levitan was initially unable to provide information about the cause of death and where the musician died.
With Rossington, the last living founder of the rock band has now passed away. Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of the most important representatives of southern rock in the 1970s. The line-up of the band has changed over the years. Gary is now in heaven with his Skynyrd brothers and family and will continue to play there as he always has, the band wrote in their post.
