We know the game: the major streaming providers regularly change their programs considerably. New content is coming and some series and film productions are being removed from the portfolio. This time, the departure from Netflix hurt a little, because it hits not only the best Spider-Man movie ever, but also an absolute cult comedy series, the last seasons of which were even produced by Netflix.
“Spider-Man: A New Universe” – until March 10, 2023
You only have a few days left to stream the best Spider-Man movie ever: On the Rotten Tomatoes review page comes the extraordinary animated film “Spider-Man: A New Universewith a score of 97% and even ahead of the blockbuster “Spider-Man: No Way Home” or Sam Raimi’s 2004 comedy blockbuster classic “Spider-Man 2”.
And rightly so, because we too gave the turbulent and deeply emotional coming-of-age animation adventure an excellent 4.5 out of 5 stars in our FILMSTARTS review and came to the following verdict:
“It is amazing how cohesive the visual mix of different styles and ideas is at all times, how advanced animation techniques and classic animation are even combined here with scenes that could have come straight from Gaspar Noé’s crazy drug fantasy. […] But the greatest achievement is: amidst all this visual bombast, telling a gripping story is never forgotten. […] How calmly the creators talk about Miles trying to find his place in this world amidst a firecracker of action laced with gags is perhaps the greatest achievement in this excellent Marvel adventure.
“Arrested Development” – until March 14, 2023
And this loss really hurts, because with “Arrested developmentthe streaming giant with the red N is losing one of the best series of all time. On IMDb, the series is currently ranked 88th among the top 100 series (as of March 2023) with a rating of 8.7 (as of March 2023). Especially the first three seasons, about the absurd experiences and existential crises of the Bluth family by series creator Mitchell Hurwitz, are a true firework of absurd humor that has lost none of its originality to this day – and continues with Hollywood greats like Michael Cera, Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and many other stars are also top notch.
Unfortunately, the two subsequent seasons produced by Netflix could no longer match the quality of previous episodes, also because some of these were told very confusingly. Nevertheless, the comedy series is still very popular today and has a devoted fan base that has remained loyal to the series to this day.
This makes Arrested Development one of the few instances where Netflix loses its own original content. Most recently, this happened with the Marvel series “Daredevil” or “Marvel’s The Punisher”, where Disney decided not to renew the licensing agreements and play these series from now on on the newly launched mouse house streaming service Disney +.
