Irina Stucki (36) has already applied as a computer scientist, prison guard, marketing specialist, and weed forester this week. He does what many people find difficult for his clients – Stucki is a full-time app writer.

When he founded the app company Ciivii in 2016, Stucki was one of the first companies on the Swiss market. But the app business is booming – meanwhile, many national providers are running around at Google.

The Swiss company index confirms that they were all founded in 2017, most of them in the last two years. More and more Swiss are paying someone else to write their application. Cost: Around 300 francs for CV and motivation letter.

Stucki is sitting in a cafe in Olten SO. His team of practice coaches and translators has a lot of work to do right now. Peak season in the job market. There are a lot of job postings, especially in the spring, as many companies discuss their personnel expenses budget at the beginning of the year.

“As soon as I think I know all the professional fields, a new field comes along,” Stucki says. That was it this week: transplant coordinator. But everything is there, from the CEO to the craftswoman or the conductor to the head physician and figure skater. Most often he writes files for jobs in the marketing or commercial fields.

Here’s how it works: Clients send Stucki their previous resume, motivational letters, job references, maybe a job posting – anything. Irina and her team learn about career and industry and create the file. It is not prohibited and does not count as ghostwriting. “We don’t add anything, we just rearrange,” says Stucki.

After studying industrial and organizational psychology, Stucki worked for a long time in a human resources department, reviewing numerous applications: blank statements, long resumes, even when an applicant submits a selfie as an application photo. Stucki says: “I noticed how many people stood in their way when applying.”

The crux of uncertainty

So why do customers reach for their wallets when they know themselves and their business best? The motivation letter in particular causes discomfort, according to Stucki: “You want to look cute and humble while having to advertise yourself for once.”

There is also a lot of uncertainty when it comes to your resume. Lots of details should be concise, almost never more than two pages long. Most people do not even realize that the number of female contestants is high. Stucki says: “The CV needs to be convincing in a few seconds. Only then will the application letter be read in its entirety.”

When it comes to creativity, Stucki always tries to relieve her clients from tension: “Job postings are usually not very creative. You can’t always reinvent the world.

Anne-Catherine Killer, Head of Career Counseling at BIZ Bern, sees both advantages and disadvantages in such profit-oriented services: “On the one hand, they can distinguish themselves from public institutions with more up-to-date HR knowledge.” In other words, to know what HR departments pay attention to. On the other hand, there is a risk that the application will look too perfect and therefore no longer believable. “If the practice no longer matches the level of education, this can have a negative impact on assessment,” says Killer.
