The most expensive school building in Zurich causes red heads

class=”sc-97fd9fa8-0 jNFKxv”>

It is somewhat reminiscent of a futuristic museum where you can linger in long corridors. 273 classrooms for 1,000 people will be built on an area of 30,000 square meters. There is also a large gym, grass playground and swimming pool. The new Saatlen school building in Zurich’s Schwamendingen district is scheduled to open in 2027.

The ambitious project is also reflected in the budget. An impressive CHF 231 million has been allocated for the new building. These are new fields. There should be 40 classrooms in the building. Primary and middle grades as well as kindergarten classes will be there. Also, as “Tages-Anzeiger” writes, children and young people with physical and multiple disabilities (BPD) should be included. It is the largest Zurich school building ever built.

Strong population growth forecast by 2035

Lucas Bally, spokesman for the construction department of André Odermatt (63), the responsible city councilor, justifies the megaproject with the massive population growth in Schwamendingen. Student numbers will increase sharply in the mid-2030s, so you should be able to offer enough space. That’s why the new building is so important.

However, both the political left and the right opposed the project. Moritz Bögli (25) from the alternative list (AL) told “Tages-Anzeiger”: “Control of the playing field alone can be a problem.” The size can cause operational problems. AL finally accepted the loan.

More expensive than building a luxury villa

SVP is different: They talk about an exaggerated schedule and exploding bureaucracy. If you calculate the cost per class, you get five million francs per class. This is more than building a luxury villa and it is not economical at all. Therefore, the party refused the loan.

SP praised the project. During the discussion, city councilor Islam Alijaj (36) said he was very pleased with the creation of an inclusive school where all children can participate in “living space education”. This also requires an attractive outdoor area next to the school, to which the architects of the Saatlen school building took care.

The city parliament has approved an enormous loan of 231 million francs, but the people have the final say. Voting will take place in June 2023. (A)
