Scientist Conrad Hoskin found the species on Scawfell Island off the coast of northeast Queensland.
With its slender legs and pointed-edged leaf-shaped tail, the lizard is said to be perfectly adapted to the cliffs of the uninhabited island. During the day, the animals hide among the stacked rocks, and at night they are on the move.
The species was introduced as the “Scawfell Island leaf-tailed gecko” (Phyllurus fimbriatus) in the journal Zootaxa. According to Hoskin, there can only be 30 specimens of animals that are about 4 inches long without a tail. However, the size of the population is difficult to estimate well, and occurrences on neighboring islands cannot be ruled out.
“It’s incredible that big and gorgeous new species are still found today,” said the researcher. “The fact that this gecko has not been discovered by science indicates that there are still hidden secrets in Australia.” (SDA)
