In 2017, it ushered in the blossoming new era of the “Star Trek” series, now coming to an end seven years later: The upcoming fifth season of “Star Trek: Discoverywill also be the last. The official “Star Trek” account of streaming service Paramount + has since given up announced, courtesy of the fans of lead actress Sonequa Martin-Green and creators Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise:
After a somewhat bumpy start, “Star Trek: Discovery” has found more and more on track over the years and has at least given us a beautiful new Captain Pike (Anson Mount) in season 2, who with “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” now leads a deservedly acclaimed series of its own.
Plus, after a massive time jump at the end of Season 2 that gave us a whole new look into the distant future of the Star Trek universe, Discovery has finally established a fun identity all its own. So it’s probably not a bad decision to say goodbye to the sci-fi series with what was originally intended to be the fifth-season finale. There is, however, another catch: as evidenced by Martin-Green’s statement mentioned above, the fifth season will be the shortest of the series with ten episodes (eventually you will end up with a total of 65 episodes) – and have to wait a little longer…
“Star Trek: Discovery” Season 5 on Paramount+
The fifth “Discovery” season shouldn’t be released until the first half of 2024, two years after the end of Season 4 Paramount+ to start – and very likely not only in the US, but also in Germany, where the streaming provider has also been available since the end of 2022. The long wait hopefully guarantees that the farewell to Michael Burnham (Martin-Green) and her Discovery crew will actually be as epic as those responsible already promise.
The first three seasons of “Star Trek: Discovery” celebrated their German premiere on Netflix at the time, before the series flew off the platform shortly before the start of its fourth season and the most recent season debuted in Germany on the ad-funded online platform Pluto TV, which belongs to Paramount (it’s also now available on Paramount+). It can’t be ruled out that season 5 will also come to Pluto TV, but we assume the focus will be more on a Paramount+ release, which should coincide with the US release.
Rosy “Star Trek” future – at least for the series
Even though we’re from “Star Trek: Discovery” in 2024 and in a few weeks from “Star Trek: Picard” have to say goodbye, the era of the modern “Star Trek” series is far from over. The animated series “Star Trek: Lower Decks” (for adults) and “Star Trek: Prodigy” (for kids) and the aforementioned “Strange New Worlds” are still running successfully – and further offshoots are planned.
Even before that, current ‘Star Trek’ boss Alex Kurtzman (who also co-wrote JJ Abrams’ reboot films) promised that further projects wouldn’t be tackled until some of the previous ones were completed – and that’s the case with ” Picard” and then soon “Discovery” in two cases. This could finally pave the way for the previously announced Starfleet Academy and Federation Intelligence Section 31 spin-offs starring Michelle Yeoh.
In the movie sector, on the other hand, the groundbreaking sci-fi franchise is still struggling:
