As Grogu and Mandalorian Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) travel through hyperspace in the season three premiere of The Mandalorian, the Force-sensitive young fellow suddenly sees the shapes of giant whales flying alongside their starship. It’s a special moment. Than it’s the first appearance of these whales, named Purrgils, in a Star Wars live-action project – and they are very important to the whole mythology of the George Lucas universe.
The Purrgils made their debut in an episode of the animated series Star Wars Rebels. There, the crew of the Ghost starship discovers those giant whale creatures moving through hyperspace. We learn a lot about her as the episode progresses. Among other things, we learn that, according to legend, their ability to travel through hyperspace using a gas was responsible for the fact that this technology was also adapted and further developed for starships in the “Star Wars” universe.
At the same time, many space travelers see them as a threat. After all, a Purrgil can be bigger than a starship, and if something like that makes its way through hyperspace regardless of navigation systems, it’s a hazard. There have been collisions in the past – usually with fatal consequences for the crews. That’s why the Purrgils are hunted down and killed, they are only rare, also try to stay away from other living creatures. However, people sensitive to power in particular can feel them – which is why Grogu can see them. An important advice for all hyperspace travelers is to always fly with the Purrgils, so that no collisions can occur. That’s exactly what Din Djarin does – although it’s not clear if he’s aware of it.
The Purrgils: An integral part of the “Star Wars” canon
Either way, the Purrgils are an incredibly important part of the Star Wars canon. After all, without them, it would be unthinkable that spaceships could fly through hyperspace. That’s why it’s a big event for fans to see her in a live-action series now. By the way, they are not only mentioned in numerous books, but recently also in a live-action series:
In Obi-Wan Kenobi, Bail Organa (Jimmy Smits) reveals to his adoptive daughter Leia (Vivien Lyra Blair) the great adventures he dreamed of when he was young. He tells her that he wanted to hunt Purrgils – which also made it clear that in the eyes of most of the galaxy’s inhabitants, the majestic creatures are just that: something to hunt.
Will the Purrgils still matter in ‘The Mandalorian’?
The exciting question, of course, is whether the Purrgils were merely placed as a little Easter egg and fan service in the opening episode of the third season of “The Mandalorian.” Or will they become really important again? We don’t know that at the moment, of course, but the latter is easy to imagine.
Also in “Star Wars Rebels” it was not just a pretense. In the grand finale of the series, the Purrgils played a major role – and what a powerful weapon they are was shown, if you get along well with them and do things together. Can the Mandalorian and Grogu enlist the help of the Purrgils in their adventure? Many perils await them on their return to Mandalore – especially since they may now have some rather disgruntled and powerful pirates on their heels (although the confrontation may have largely been a reference to the upcoming Skeleton Crew series).
But the Purrgils can only be just such a series of cross-references to another series. Finally, we also know that the upcoming Ahsoka series will focus on the title character’s search for Ezra Bridger (from Star Wars Rebels). And Ezra had a special bond with the Purrgils, so they could play a part in finding him.
Giant Creatures Week at “Star Wars”
It is also noticeable that this “Star Wars” week is all about gigantic creatures. The opening episode didn’t just feature the hyperspace whales. The episode featured a Mandalorian battle against a huge giant alligator from the start (which, according to the concept art in the credits, could have been a little more freaky).
And at the center of the “Star Wars: The Bad Batch” animated series, which is also running at the same time, in the current episode we get a new insight into the Emperor’s cloning program – in the form of a massive monster that continues to grow through delivery. of energy. The fact that three different giant creatures appear in the two “Star Wars” episodes released today, Wednesday, doesn’t seem like a coincidence.
