These are five weak Bordeaux classics

The cold and rainy weather meant that the vast majority of grapes were not ripening ideally. Many castles did not even produce half as much as a normal crop. Plenty of sugar was added to fermented wines to achieve the required alcohol levels.

While not as bad as 2013, there is still little reason for Bordeaux lovers to spend their money on 2002 wines. Wines often have low concentration and often immature, biting tannins. A few exceptions for successful midway drops are limited to the Margaux and Pauillac regions.

After severe frost damage the previous year, the 1992 Bordeaux crop offered one thing above all: lots of rain. In fact, summer was the wettest in over 50 years. The famous winery Château Petrus desperately tried to protect much of the soil in the vineyard from the devastating wetness with a black plastic sheet. Eventually, heavy rains caused a dilution of the grape concentration in Bordeaux.

This Bordeaux classic can neither be sugar coated nor drinkable. I still remember the perfectly stored Château Margaux magnum, which turned out to be thin, immature water. For many Bordeaux wine lovers, the 1977 harvest is considered the weakest of the entire decade. The wines are so bad they’re probably not even suitable for cooking.

A cool below-average August and rainy growing season also contributed to poor wine quality at this Bordeaux harvest. Due to the immature tannins, these wines were always a little tiring and rarely offered a pleasant drinking experience. I would be surprised if I could still enjoy just one Bordeaux wine from this vintage.
