There was no blessing on the property: when the then German Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) and his husband Daniel Funke bought the property in the posh Berlin district of Dahlem in July 2020, it rained criticism. In particular, the stately amount of the purchase price and the financing of the required 4.125 million euros were discussed.
Jens Spahn took legal action against parts of the coverage that, among other things, published the purchase price and details of the real estate transaction. However, he was defeated and had to accept the publication of the purchase price. Interest in his home did not diminish in the years that followed.
As the watson media partner T-Online has now learned exclusively, Jens Spahn and Daniel Funke have separated from their property.
“Yes, we sold the house,” confirms Jens Spahn when asked. “The purchase was then the wrong time, in the middle of the pandemic,” admits the CDU politician.
To this day, demonstrators and spectators stand in front of the house: “Anonymous mail comes in regularly, recently another package with excrement,” says Spahn.
According to information from T-Online, the couple sold their house with the help of a broker for 5.3 million euros. Accordingly, 42-year-old Spahn and his 41-year-old husband made no profit from the real estate business. T-Online has seen documents showing that the purchase price, renovation and additional purchase costs together amount to almost 5.5 million euros. The couple suffered a loss of 200,000 euros due to the sale.
The documents also provide information on the details of the financing: The couple financed about 80 percent of the cost of buying the house, extensive remodeling, brokerage, ancillary costs and taxes with loans and about 20 percent (one million euros) from the sale of an apartment and share gains.
Spahn added to T-Online the reasons for the quick sale: “Financially we were overstretched. We are no different than many others fulfilling their dream of owning their own four walls. Inflation will do the rest.”
Another role in the decision to sell may have been played by the cover of the mirror under the title “The treasure of Attersee”.
The magazine’s reporters investigated whether Spahn and Funke could only acquire the villa because of a significant inheritance from Daniel Funke’s father and conducted extensive research into Spahn’s husband’s private environment. He works as a consultant for Burda publishing house and is not in the public eye because of his political position. That the second sentence of the article says “The story now turns out to be a fairy tale”, shows how meager the thesis was before the large-scale coverage.
With the sale, the Spahn couple now draws a line under the luxury villas chapter. Jens Spahn he said in an interview with t-online: “Our happiness does not depend on a house. That is why we have chosen a clear line.”
Spahn and Funke stay at the villa until the couple find a new place to live. The move is planned for mid-year.
