“Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania”: The two (!) post-credits scenes explained

After Black Panther: Wakanda Forever last had just one credits scene (and not even a “real one”), the new MCU movie Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania returns with a mid-credits scene and post-credits scene at the very end moment. end. And unlike the recent “Thor 4” or “Doctor Strange 2”, both are directly important for the future. Than the first credits scene is preparing”Avengers 5: The Kang Dynasty‘before, while the second credits scene is straight out of the second season’Lokimust come from. But one after the other:

Ant-Man 3 ending explained: Is Kang really dead?

Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania ends with quite a surprise: Kang the Conqueror (played by Jonathan Majors, like all Kang variants) is apparently killed when he gets sucked into the multiverse drive of his starship, the Scott Lang aka Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) with Pym Particles to destabilize.

But is Kang The Conqueror really dead? The scene seems to suggest that, but after returning to San Francisco, Scott is suddenly not so sure anymore. Apparently, the last word has not yet been spoken here, because a final death (if there’s such a thing in the MCU at all) looks different. However, another scene also suggests that this Kang was actually killed – and here we come to the mid-credits scene:

The mid-credits scene: The Council of Kangs

Because in the mid-credits scene, we encounter countless other Kang variants from the countless parallel worlds of the Marvel multiverse. Particularly Prominent Appearance: Rama-Tut (Kang as Pharaoh in Ancient Egypt), Immortus (a very old Kang), and a cyborg Kang, who may be the MCU version of Iron Lad (a young Kang fighting his evil elder variants). All are of course also played by Jonathan Majors.

But these are by no means all variants, because we see an entire arena full of kangs. The Kang triumvirate now wants to discuss with them how to deal with the Avengerswho are slowly discovering the multiverse and who (apparently) killed Kang The Conqueror, who had been banished to the Quantum Realm by the other Kangs.

Incidentally, the last shot of the scene is taken almost exactly from the Marvel Comics, where the so-called “Council Of Kangs” has met several times. In the comics, one of the Kangs (Immortus) wants the Council to take out the other Kangs in the multiverse, but in the MCU it may be different.

After the mid-credits scene, there are many indications that not one single Kang, but the council of Kangs is the great threat to “Avengers 5” And “Avengers 6” is, which also fits the subtitle “The Kang Dynasty”. In addition, Kang or the Kangs would also differ from previous villain Thanos from “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”.

The Post-Credits Scene: Loki & Mobius vs. Kang

At the very end of the credits of “Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania,” a cherished MCU tradition celebrates its comeback: the post-credits scene is likely taken directly from “Loki” Season 2, which begins on Disney+ in Mid-2023 . Such foreshadowing of future projects has happened a number of times in MCU credits, most recently in Doctor Strange featuring a scene from Thor 3: Day of Decision.

Kang also plays an important role in the post-credits scene, this time in the Victor Timely variation. In the comics, this Kang version travels back in time to establish a “base” of sorts in the early 20th century and influence future events from there, most notably the emergence of the first superheroes.

From the scene in “Quantumania” it is not clear whether all this also happens in “Loki”. But it seems as if Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and TVA agent Mobius (Owen Wilson) in the second season taking a closer look at Kang and its variants – possible in all times and multiverses. And this fits the ending of the first season “Loki”:

In it, the Kang variant called The One Who Stays, who watches over the true timeline, was killed. The death of this Kang, who by his own account was the first to discover the multiverse, apparently changed the course of history: after returning to the Time Variance Authority (TVA), Loki learns that things have changed there. Statues of Kang are everywhere, while Mobius and the others don’t know Loki anymore. This is probably the premise for the second season and the reason why Loki and co do business with Kang.
