Mother of seven in Poland gives birth to quintuplets

A mother of seven has given birth to quintuplets in Poland after an unexpected pregnancy. Her offspring was born prematurely in Krakow on Sunday, but was safe.

According to Polish media, Dominika Clarke is already a mother of seven children aged between ten months and twelve years. She feels “better than expected” after the pregnancy, Clarke said.

The newborns, three girls and two boys, are named Arianna Daisy, Charles Patrick, Elizabeth May, Evangeline Rose and Henry James. The babies were born by caesarean section at 29 weeks and are currently on a ventilator. The head of neonatology at the Krakow hospital was confident in the condition of the five premature babies. “We hope to reach the happy moment of her release,” said Ryszard Lauterbach.

Actually, the couple had only one more child planned. “But it turns out there are more,” say Clarke and her British husband Vince.

According to the hospital, the chance of giving birth to quintuplets is one in 52 million. The “chances of winning the lottery” were higher, the lucky mother said. But as a mathematician, she likes “this kind of statistics”. (sda/afp)
