“Harry Potter” and its prequels: the most successful fantasy franchise of all time

The latest movie in the Wizarding World, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore hit theaters in April 2022 and grossed just over $400 million worldwide. A hefty sum, but arguably not enough to warrant another installment in the series, and certainly nothing compared to what the fantasy franchise as a whole has swept at the box office. With a total box office of approximately $9.6 billion (!), the “Harry Potter” saga is by far the most successful fantasy film series of all time at the box office!

For comparison: The Middle-earth franchise centered around “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” has grossed just under $6 billion, although the comparison is of course somewhat unfair, since the “Wizarding World” consists of eleven films and the adventure “Middle-earth” consists of only six films. On average, the “Middle-earth” films grossed $992 million and the “Wizarding World” offshoots “only” $877 million each.

That’s only true if you don’t count the 1978 Lord of the Rings animated film. It only made a measly $30,000 and would reduce the outstanding portion of “Middle-earth” movies to $850 million. Thus, fans of “Harry Potter” and “Lord of the Rings” can argue about which of the two franchises has had more success per film. If you take the total as an indicator, then the “Wizarding World” is clearly ahead.
