Madness: “Avatar 2” beats “Avatar” and reaches the next cinema milestone in Germany – now even the ultimate record is shaking!

James Cameron is the King of Germany. At least when it comes to luring the locals to the cinemas. This has not only been the case since today, but is now once again impressively confirmed: Avatar: The way of the waterIn its eighth week, it has now made the jump to the second place of the highest-grossing films of all time in Germany. The top spot is within reach.

In Germany alone, the film was able to generate 118 million euros a few days ago. After 392,500 tickets sold last weekend yielded around 8.61 million euros, 300,000 ticket sales are predicted for this weekend (via ). And that means: “Avatar 2” will probably overtake its mega-successful predecessor from 2009 at the German box office at the latest today!

“Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora” once grossed a total of 119.1 million euros and number 2 on the all-time charts – when it was originally released and including reruns. However, that is exactly what the sequel has captured, with more than 120 million euros (exact figures will follow as always on Monday).

The current leader is probably still – as I said: King of Germany – another James Cameron blockbuster: his romantic epic “Titanic” even managed to sell more than 126.2 million and is (probably) still the undisputed number one 1. Still. But that’s likely to change soon…

Will “Avatar 2” become the highest-grossing movie in Germany?

One thing is clear: in terms of visitor numbers, “Avatar 2” will not become the new number 1 in Germany. It should probably remain “The Jungle Book” forever. In the late 1960s, more than 27 million tickets were sold in Germany for the Disney classic. A value that is utopian nowadays. (For comparison, “Avatar” had 11.69 million views, “Avengers: Endgame” had 5.13 million).

However, when it comes to the box office, The Way Of Water has an edge over its all-time rivals: inflation, which is not included in the calculation, and increased ticket prices. With surcharges for Dolby Atmos, IMAX, 3D and extra length, you quickly pay more than 20 euros for an “Avatar 2” card. There is no doubt that the cinema experience is always worth it. Nevertheless: in the same breath fewer tickets are needed to break box office records.

“Titanic” is now within reach, shattering the ultimate sales record at the German box office. Besides, an unprecedented showdown is coming soon. Than:

“Titanic” will be released in a revised version on February 9, 2023 to mark its 25th anniversary and will take away some IMAX appearances from “Avatar 2”. – and, of course, make a million or two more. But while the start of the event around Valentine’s Day will certainly be used by many, “The Way Of Water” should draw a lot of people to the cinemas in the coming weeks.

And even if IMAX theaters nationwide showcasing “Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania” were fully booked by February 15, the second Pandora adventure is certainly far from over. We believe: The all-time German charts will soon have a new leader.

What are the chances of becoming the number 1 in the world?

While it’s probably only a matter of time before “Avatar 2” becomes the highest-grossing movie of all time in Germany, it’s still hard to make a global prediction. With a worldwide box office revenue of currently $ 2.130 billion, the duel with “Titanic” is now also on the horizon on an international level, which the film is also likely to win easily. But to make up for one spot or the other, “The Way Of Water” needs what characterizes many Cameron blockbusters: some damn staying power.

The film will soon move on to No. 3 on the Best of All Time list. “Titanic” currently holds it at $2.187 billion. However, the two top places still require a huge leap: Because “Avengers: Endgame” ($2.797 billion) and “Avatar” ($2.922 billion) play in a league of their own.

So it will probably come down to how many Avatar 2 fans want to see the sci-fi fantasy adventure over and over again while it’s still possible. Otherwise James Cameron will have to settle for 3rd place. The blockbuster specialist should be able to handle that, since his films are also in 1st and 4th place…
