Finally, the new DC film bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran have pulled the cat out of the bag: their announcement for the new DC Universe (DCU) includes ten films and series, including films about the figureheads Batman and Superman. But as you’d expect from “Guardians Of The Galaxy” director Gunn, there are also some projects involving characters that aren’t necessarily mainstream superheroes. “swamp thing‘, which has been described as a true horror film. And probably a man who has already tested the limits of the superhero genre is responsible for this: James Mangold (“Logan-The Wolverine”).
With its tragic storyline, bleak end-times setting, and high level of violence, “Logan” was anything but an enjoyable superhero fun, as one usually expects from Marvel. It’s hopeful that Swamp Thing will follow a similar trajectory as it aims to explore the dark origins of the comic book character, even though the project is still part of the DCU.
Mangold already had a picture of the DC swamp creature shortly after the announcement of “Swamp Thing” & Co Posted fueling speculation about his involvement in the project:
The major American trade journals have now unanimously confirmed this. However the talks are still at a very early stage, as can be read everywhere. Mangold’s commitment to “Swamp Thing” hasn’t been confirmed yet, but such “early talks” usually end well.
When does ‘Swamp Thing’ hit theaters?
However it will be a while before Mangold can start working on “Swamp Thing”. He is currently still busy with the finishing touches and promotional work for “Indiana Jones and the Call of Destiny”, which will be released in German cinemas on June 29, 2023. Then it says so and Co., premiering the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” aka “Going Electric” starring “Dune” star Timothée Chalamet.
Thereafter Mangold probably couldn’t really start work on “Swamp Thing” until 2025 and a theatrical release probably wouldn’t be possible until 2026 at the earliestmaybe not until 2027. But that’s all still within the scope of the DCU, which shouldn’t really kick off until July 2025 with “Superman: Legacy,” which is written (and likely directed) by James Gunn himself.
And as Gunn and Peter Safran never tire of pointing out, it’s very important to them that those behind the DCU movies take the time their projects need. No movie should be made without a finished screenplay that everyone is happy with, as the saying goes:
