If you want to immerse yourself uncompromisingly in the world of Jake Sully, Neytiri and Co., you cannot avoid going to the cinema. Because on the big screen, “Avatar: The Way Of Water” unfolds above all a visual immersion from which you can hardly escape. The bigger the screen, the better the projection, the deeper you dive into the fascinating world of Pandora, which director and visionary James Cameron first showed us in “Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora”. but how long will it be possible to experience the best possible version of the sequel to the highest grossing film of all time?
The film was released in theaters seven weeks ago and continues to top both the local and US box office charts. That will probably change soon – and with it the possibility to enjoy the film in IMAX 3D (and therefore in the best picture and sound quality). So if you still have the movie on your watch list, take the opportunity to watch it in that format quickly. It’s worth the one or two euros extra for the ticket. We’ll tell you how long you have before that…
“Titanic” & “Ant-Man 3”: IMAX competition coming up
One thing right away: “Avatar 2” will probably be in the programs of numerous cinemas and cinema chains throughout Germany for a few more weeks. After all, the latest Cameron vehicle continues to sell more tickets than any other movie. However, that’s exactly what’s likely to change in the coming weeks – which will also have an impact on IMAX screenings of the film.
On February 9”titanic“ Back to the cinema for the 25th anniversary. The classic, also directed by James Cameron, will then be shown in a newly revised version, which will not only fill many Dolby Atmos halls from next Thursday, but will also be shown in IMAX 3D. This leads to a duel between Cameron and Cameron.
Possibly the most epic romance in movie history will claim some performances that would otherwise have been occupied by “Avatar 2”. and a week later it should have been almost entirely with the IMAX performances of “The Way Of Water”.
February 15 starts with “Ant-Man and the Wasp: QuantumaniaThen namely the latest superhero blockbuster from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and this should traditionally get its fair share of IMAX slots. Or actually: almost all of them.
Our tip: if you want to see “Avatar 2” in IMAX 3D, you should plan a visit to the cinema in the next two weeks. Alternatively, there would still be numerous versions in 2D, standard 3D and Co. should be – but you really only get the ultimate Pandora experience in IMAX format or optionally with Dolby Atmos 3D. At least that’s what the author of this article thinks, who made clear differences in a direct comparison after three cinema visits – and has planned a fourth for the next few days. Then of course again in the IMAX.
“Avatar 2” will soon become the third highest grossing movie of all time
This also leads to a box office confrontation like never before. While James Cameron has now directed three of the four highest-grossing films of all time, making history in the process, there is now even a direct duel between “Avatar: The Way Of Water” (Rank 4) and “Titanic” (Rank 3). The latter currently stands at $2.187 billion, just shy of $70 million more than the second “Avatar” movie ($2.118 billion).
Finally even if “Titanic” will soon add a million or two, “Avatar 2” should easily pass it. While the re-release of “Titanic” looks like an event kick-off, “The Way Of Water” should continue to draw people to theaters this February and sooner or later take third place on the all-time box office charts.
Can the film climb even higher in the ranking? It’s not impossible, but “Avatar 2” would need real, real stamina or – like “Titanic” and also “Avengers: Endgame” (Rank 2) and “Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora” (Rank 1) – reappearances on a later date. With USD 2.797 and USD 2.922 billion respectively, the current leaders are still relatively far away for the time being.
