When Netflix canceled the “Blockbuster” series in December 2022 after just one season, it was a hit with social media and movie magazines around the world. After all, the series that flopped on Netflix and was torn apart by critics and audiences is anything but a blockbuster, so it’s a box office hit. A similar case could now also be possible the series “Restartbecause it was also discontinued – and therefore needs to be restarted itself.
The comedy series runs on Disney+ in this country, “Reboot” is an original series from the American streaming service Hulu, which does not exist in Germany. Hulu is jointly owned by Disney and NBCUniversal, but because Disney controls the majority, most non-US Hulu originals end up on Disney+ sooner or later. This also happened with “Reboot”: after the Hulu season finale in October 2022 The entire first season was released on Disney+ in November.

There is no information from the American trade journals about the reasons for the dismissalbut in this case, it certainly shouldn’t have been the reviews – they’re pretty decent (88 percent positive press reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and at least 68 percent positive user reviews). Presumably, “Reboot” just wasn’t watched enough – Like most other streaming services, Hulu will also have to look more at the money in the future.
Has “Reboot” dug its own grave?
Or maybe the series was a bit too much then it did her good? Reboot is a series-within-a-series about young filmmaker Hannah (Rachel Bloom) who comes up with the idea of reviving (rebooting) an early 2000s sitcom. So she approaches the streaming service Hulu (!) and gets the contract.
But because Hannah also wants to bring back the old cast, the first problems soon arise. Because the stars of that time (including Keegan-Michael Key and Johnny Knoxville) are now a sad shadow of themselves. And Gordon (Paul Reiser), who invented and still owns the rights to the original series, ensures issues.
The last episode of the first (and now possibly final) season “Reboot” is all about the looming threat of dismissal — a template for all sorts of pithy remarks and tongue-in-cheek puns, which we’ll save at this point.
After all, the meta concept of “reboot” lends itself perfectly to reviving the series on another channel or streaming service. And that’s exactly what series creator Steven Levitan (“Modern Family”) is hoping for, according to consistent reports from and Co. is already looking for a new home for “Reboot” season 2 and would have already found a potential buyer. We will keep you informed…
