The Navy CIS franchise is still going strong. The main series (which was originally already a spin-off of “JAG – On Order of Honor”) started its 20th (!) season in the US in the fall of 2022 (albeit without former figurehead Mark Harmon). And their first offshoot “Navy CIS: LA” is now in its 14th year! But that’s the end of the series…
As American trade magazines unanimously report, “NCIS: LA” is being discontinued after its current 14th season and a total of 322 episodes. While that’s obviously a proud length (and twice as long as “NCIS: New Orleans,” which was canceled in 2021), the cancellation – pronounced in the middle of the current season – comes as a surprise to some. Not least because you just got to celebrate another huge success with a major crossover event from “NCIS”, “NCIS: LA” and the still fledgling “NCIS: Hawaii”.
However, the high cost factor of the long-running crime thriller may have played a big part in the decision, especially at a time when broadcasters are increasingly looking for ways to save money. A further extension of the contracts with the main actors LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell, who led the cast from the beginning and were not unknown before, would probably have been very expensive again.
When is the “NCIS: LA” Finals in Germany?
In the US, the very last episode of “NCIS: Los Angeles” will flicker across the screens on May 14, 2023. When it will be in Germany is not yet clear. In Germany, the 13th season is currently being broadcast on free TV (after it ended on pay TV at the end of 2022). After a month-long break, the 20th of 22 episodes of the season will air on Saturday, February 7, at 9:15 p.m.
The 14th and final “Navy CIS: LA” season on pay TV should start in this country in mid-2023. Free TV should then follow again a short time later. It could be the end of the year before we see the big series finalegiving local fans a little more time to prepare for the farewell.
The Navy CIS franchise continues to grow
Even if the longest-lived “NCIS” spin-off is coming to an end soon, there are also several consolations for all lovers of the entire franchise as it diligently expands.
Not only will the parent series continue indefinitely as mentioned, but the second season of the latest offshoot “Navy CIS: Hawaii” should be making its way to Germany soon. And that’s not all: “Navy CIS: Sydney” is currently being prepared for the first series from the universe to be located outside the US.
