The list of Netflix shows canceled after a season or two just added a new entry: The streaming service now also hasDisconnected‘ discontinued, the new series with ‘How I met your mother“-Star Neil patrick harris. This joins Uncoupled with shows like First Kill, Warrior Nun, Midnight Goosebumps, and 1899, all of which were canceled around the turn of the year.
Is Netflix doing itself a favor in the long run? In any case, there are angry messages and comments on the internet, but at the same time a great disillusion seems to have set in. For example, below the recently released official trailer of “Lockwood & Co.” countless comments from users who firmly assume that the new Netflix series will be canceled after one season anyway:
Still, it’s probably too early to say that Netflix is digging its own grave here. As so often, the internet does not necessarily reflect reality, because in reality Netflix experienced a sensational year in 2022, in which, for example, five of the ten best-watched series appeared at all or received new seasons (such as the mega hit “Wednesday”).
Most people with a Netflix subscription probably didn’t notice the cancellations – and that’s how it should be with “Unlinked”. However, the RomCom series did not attract much interest anyway and despite a prominent cast only made it to the top 10 most watched series in most countries (including Germany) for a week.
“Unlinked” probably just wasn’t watched enough to warrant a second season. And possibly too little watched – a stat that doesn’t appear in the official Netftlix top charts, but seems to play an important role in the streaming service’s internal evaluation, as the magazine recently shown.
So if the majority of subscribers only watch one or two episodes and then drop out, the risk of Netflix dropping a series is of course quite high. And it doesn’t seem to matter (almost) how many people have watched the series.
This is disconnected
“Uncoupled” is about Michael Lawson (Neil Patrick Harris), whose seemingly perfect life falls apart overnight when his longtime partner Colin (Tuc Watkins) abruptly breaks up with her after 17 years of dating. Now he’s single again, in his mid-40s, and it’s totally overwhelming him…
