Netflix’s Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion, has a roster of stars – the characters are flamboyant, flamboyant and often hilarious. But Derol (Noah Segan) turns out to be a real scene thief, although he is very rare and is actually not that special. Warning, spoilers ahead for Derol’s role in the movie!
The laid-back guy, who isn’t part of the big party clique around Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), but just hangs out on Miles Bron’s (Edward Norton) island because he’s “in trouble”, is a big mystery. because he’s just there. And anyone who thinks Derol would play an important role again is wrong – which is exactly why the character is so funny. Derol is the irrational element in the otherwise subtly thought-out crime spectacle. And just a nice guy!
Derol has many fans
That Derol has quickly become a fan favorite is evidenced by tweets about the character demanding the “Derol cut”, describing Derol as the real hero of the film, or admiring how well Derol succeeds simply by using his own to interfere.
But what is Derol all about? In an interview with Director and screenwriter Rian Johnson explained that he initially wrote Derol purely as a comedic element, but with each scene Derol appeared in, the character took on a very special importance. Derol is just a moment of chaos in this otherwise tight-knit story. In addition, the figure is a species Kat Kalin, that is, a person who does not belong to the circle of the rich, but who is somehow always there. TV actor Kato Kaelin lived with OJ Simpson as a “house guest” in the 1990s and became a key witness at his trial.
There is a real Derol in Rian Johnson’s life
Rian Johnson also uses the character of Derol to bring two of his best friends to Glass Onion. For one Derol actor Noah Segan, who has starred in all of Johnson’s films to date. And second, one of his oldest friends, who became the inspiration and namesake for the character: Derol Frye.
Rian Johnson previously named a character in one of his films after this friend: Brendan Frye in Brick, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. In “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” it is now the first name used – and more than that: Rian Johnson used even more of his sidekick’s traits as inspiration for the movie Derol. This was confirmed to Derol Frye :
He’s the kind of guy who rides his motorcycle to a screening of Rian Johnson’s new movie and then crashes into a friend’s couch. He too had long hair as a teenager and was kind of a hippie. And he likes to drink Mexican beer – in the film Derol can always be seen with a bottle of Corona beer in his hand. Also, the real Derol is in a band called Little Petie & the Mean Old Men — and Rian Johnson had them film Derol’s favorite band without further ado.
A mood gun that steals everyone’s show
Derol actor Noah Segan said he never met the real Derol, but created the character as Rian Johnson described his friend: as a Guy who likes to have fun and is a real mood gun.
Initially, Derol Frye was skeptical that Rian Johnson would involve him in his film in this way, even though Johnson assured him that Derol would be the coolest guy in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. But when he saw the movie, he realized Johnson was right: “I texted him afterwards, ‘You’re right. He was the coolest guy in the movie.’” And after seeing Glass On for the second time, he concluded, “This guy definitely steals the show.”
The fact that Rian Johnson keeps finding surprising ways to incorporate his friends and favorite stars into his films is nothing new. Here’s a look at who’s in Glass Onion:
