Netflix paid $450 million for “Glass Onion” and another Benoit Blanc crime thriller from director Rian Johnson after its predecessor “Knives Out” became a huge hit in theaters. A hefty investment, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that the streaming service was on the right track here: because after “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” made it to the list of the most successful Netflix movies of all time last week, it takes off Crime fun is already on its way to the top 3.
In the week from January 2 to January 8, 2023, no fewer than 44.3 million hours were watched on Netflix for ‘Glass Onion’. This means that there are now a total of 253.7 million hours – that’s enough for 5th place:
- “Red Notice” (364 million)
- “Don’t look up” (360 million)
- “Bird Box” (282 million)
- “The Gray Man” (253.9 million)
- “Glass Onion” (253.7 million)
- “The Adam Project” (233 million)
- Tyler Rake: extraction (231 million)
- “Purple Hearts” (229 million)
- “The Unforgivable” (214.7 million)
- “The Irishman” (214.6 million)
In fact, at the time of writing (January 11, 2023), “Glass Onion” may already be #4, because between “The Gray Man” and “Glass Onion” there are only a paltry 150,000 viewing hours. But does Benoit Blanc also make it to the podium on the list of most watched Netflix movies of all time?
At least everything looks like it. Then the current 3rd place (“Bird Box”) is only 30 million away from “Glass Onion” with 282 million hours. And even though “Knives Out 2” has been viewed significantly less in recent weeks than during the holiday season: The thriller fun will pack in these 30 million hours.
Netflix always takes the first 28 days after release into account for the leaderboard. As of Netflix’s launch on December 23, 2022 and current chart status on January 8, 2023, “Glass Onion” has 12 days left to continue accumulating Watch Time.
Meanwhile, however, another Netflix movie is poised to snatch the crown of Netflix’s highest-grossing movie of the week from Benoit Blanc: “The Memorable Case of Mr. Poe” starring Christian Bale was narrowly beaten last week, only having three days to rack up nearly 43 million hours (Netflix launch was Jan. 6). Chances are Mr. Poe will have an edge over Mr. Blanc next time…
