Israeli start-up develops vegan canned tuna

Nowadays there is a plant-based alternative for almost all meat and fish products. Now also for canned tuna! The Israeli food tech company Vgarden has developed a vegan tuna Same appearance, texture and taste as the conventional canned product hshould eat.

With this, the company not only wants to meet the growing demand for sustainable fish alternatives, but also respond to the problem of overfished and rapidly declining tuna populations in the world’s oceans.

The experts at Vgarden have been working on the vegan tuna recipe for a year now. The challenge was to develop a product that can be preserved and sterilized at high temperatures and still retain its full flavor and texture. That has now succeeded. The vegan tuna is already sold in both retail and catering in some countries.

The ingredient list of the fish substitute is short. The tuna is based on pea protein and is produced in an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient way. The company has patented the process and formula.

Tom Rothman, Head of Global Sales at Vgarden, explained to Vegconomist:

This not only poses a problem for food security, but also has a negative impact on the delicate and fragile balance of the marine environment. “Our plant-based tuna solution can help prevent this environmental catastrophe and restore tuna populations in the wild,” Rothman said.

Vgarden has already launched several meat and dairy alternatives in Israel. The herbal product line «Mashumashu» is so popular in Israel because because about 5 percent of the entire population eats vegan.

The more plant-based alternatives there are, the more unnecessary it is to continue to consume meat and fish and thus harm the planet. In this regard, every new vegan product on the market is a win.

Vgarden’s products are popular in Israel, as well as in Australia, Canada, Asia and Europe. The vegan tuna is not yet commercially available in Germany. The can could also be made of a packaging material other than aluminium.
