The Witcher: Blood Origin is not getting a second season. It doesn’t need a prophetic gift like Ithlinne (Ella Schrey-Yeats) has in the fantasy series, and it doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the disastrous reviews on film forums and social media. Much more Netflix announced “Blood Origin” as a complete one-season miniseries from the start, which will surely stay that way after the lousy reviews and weak access numbers. But there’s a lot more planned for the “The Witcher” universe on Netflix.
The Witcher Season 3: Summer 2023 on Netflix
First of all, there is of course the parent series: it is already known that “The Witcher” will return in the summer of 2023 with season 3. But when exactly? Well, recently showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich revealed that it’s still “about eight months” before the new episodes come out. Season 3 will likely start between July and September 2023.
However, it remains to be seen if Netflix can once again inspire the sobering fan base following “Blood Origin” and Henry Cavill’s departure as Geralt after Season 3 with the new episodes for “The Witcher.” In addition to season 4 with Liam Hemsworth replacing Geralt, there are plenty of other projects planned, which can also be canceled very quickly if in doubt…
Also planned: more anime and animation
That’s how the series should be “The Witcher: Rats” fill the gap between season 3 and season 4 and tell more about the rat gang known from the book, which Ciri (Freya Allan) joins for a while. Whether Freya Allan will also be there is still unknown, but the shooting should start soon.
In addition, after the anime prequel “Nightmare Of The Wolf”, which was released in August 2021 a second anime movie follow. Apart from this announcement, there is no new information about it.
And finally, Schmidt Hissrich and Co. to it too family-friendly (!) animated series in the Witcher universe. What exactly should that look like? That’s what the showrunner explained :
“How do we do ‘The Witcher’ without all the gore, without all the violence? The truth is, these things to me are the accessories of this world. When you peel away those layers, you find simple fables at the core. That’s with all the short stories like that [‚The Witcher‘-Erfinder] Andrew Sapkowski. It’s a lot of folklore and mythology, just like Grimm’s fairy tales or even Disney movies.”
Whether Netflix continues to expand the “The Witcher” franchise will certainly also depend on how the mood develops in the coming months. We can well imagine that not only “The Witcher” season 3, but possibly even the lead actor change in season 4 will be awaited before further projects are announced or started.
