Here you have to move to have as much holiday as possible

Where you live in Switzerland has a big influence on the number of holidays you can sleep in – thanks to the spirit of the canton. We’ll show you where to go to get the most out of federalism.

The number of holidays in each canton varies enormously: for example, a Ticino resident who moves to the canton of Neuchâtel will have to swallow twice when he finds out that instead of 15 he only has eight holidays. We have made an overview for you:

Ticino is not only the sunniest canton in Switzerland, but also the happiest when it comes to the number of public holidays. With saying and writing 15 holidays the Italian-speaking canton on the outskirts of the country leads the ranking. In addition to the most common, widespread holidays, there are several more: Am March 19 Saint Joseph is celebrated – in Italy and Ticino this day is dedicated to the fathers. At the June 29 the Ticino celebrate the apostles Peter and Paul with a day off and also the conception of Mary December 8 makes work-shy hearts beat faster.

Schwyz and Uri share second place in the ranking. It is no coincidence that the two cantons in Central Switzerland have an above-average number of public holidays: Uri and Schwyz are cantons with a strong Catholic tradition – church holidays often have a whole day off. For example, the day of three holy kings celebrated. In the canton of Schwyz, for example 6 January Reason for different customs, which may differ from place to place.

The youngest Swiss canton is also a paradise for late risers. Like its neighbor Bern, the Jura am January 2nd with the Berchtold’s Day an extra day to sleep off his New Year’s hangover. Beyond what feels like every church holiday imaginable, the calendar goes on to say June 23 also a holiday in honor of the separation of the canton of Jura from the canton of Bern.

The canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden takes fourth place in the ranking with 12 public holidays. This is followed by the cantons of Thurgau, Bern, Glarus, Obwalden and Nidwalden, each with 10 public holidays. In the cantons of Aargau, Zurich, Lucerne, Zug, Freiburg, Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, Schaffhausen, St. Gallen, Vaud, Valais and Geneva, the population has 9 public holidays.

If you can’t sleep until after six in the morning because you love going to work, you’ll love the cantons of Neuchâtel, Graubünden, Solothurn and Appenzell Ausserrhoden: here only 8 days are credited to your holiday account.

Because the Swiss system with its 26 cantons does not yet have enough to do, there are still differences at Community level. So here is the ranking of the municipalities with the most local holidays:

If you really don’t want to work a 5-day week at all, move to Bellinzona: the city merges with its canton 16 holidays all honor. Those who work in Bellinzona are the only ones in Ticino who don’t have to go to work on Ash Wednesday.

Einsiedeln also shines incredibly 16 holidays per year! St. Meinradstag is celebrated here as the only place in Switzerland. According to legend, the hermit Meinrad was killed by two innkeepers, and the police could only solve the case with the help of two ravens, who led them to the criminals. Also special is the feast day of the consecration of angels, which goes back to the fact that Jesus would have declared Einsiedeln a saint.

In the Grisons of Mesocco, the Virgin Mary is celebrated twice: in addition to the more widespread holiday of the Assumption of Mary, the small village near the Italian border also celebrates the conception of the Virgin Mary on December 8. So the holiday score is 15 paid vacation days per year.

Anyone who works in Andermatt can do that 14 days a year on the slopes instead of at the office. But because the ski lift is occupied by tourists from Switzerland and elsewhere on ordinary holidays, there is another one on February 5 that only applies to Andermatt and five other Swiss communities: the day of Saint Agatha, who was killed because she was a Christian and did not want to marry a Roman governor. Her tomb is said to have deflected Etna’s lava and thus saved Catania.

In Neuheim in the canton of Zug it is 10 paid vacation days per year. Three of them are dedicated to Saint Mary: in addition to the Assumption and the Conception, the birth of the Mother Jesus is celebrated here on September 8, as nowhere else in Switzerland.

Anyone who (for whatever reason) really wants to move to St. Gallen should look around for an apartment in the municipality of Vilters-Wangs. There is one more day off here than in the rest of the canton. On January 17, Saint Anthony is celebrated, who is said to have turned 105 years old.

The fact that the canton of Solothurn scores so poorly in the public holiday ranking need not interest a municipality: Kleinlützel is included 12 holidays 4 days more per year than most of its Kantonsgspöndli. This is especially common among residents of the Bucheggberg district, which are in the same canton but have only half as many public holidays per year.
