It is known that James Cameron has other big plans for the “Avatar” franchise after “The Way Of Water”, which is currently in theaters. “Avatar 3” has already been filmed and will start in 2024. He worked out the scripts for the whole with a whole team of screenwriters movies. Completely finished scripts also exist for “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5”, which Cameron, contrary to the usual Hollywood secrecy, handed over to key participants such as stars and central crew members so they know where the journey is going.
“Avatar 5” plays a particularly important role in this. Because even if James Cameron doesn’t rule out further sequels i.e. “Avatar 6”, “Avatar 7”, “Avatar 8” etc, “Avatar 5” will be a grand finale first of all – as well as his personal final film in the franchise. Other parts would then have to be taken over by someone else who has been trained by him beforehand.
‘Avatar 5’: an emotional finale… on Earth?
The screenplay for “Avatar 5”, which Cameron then co-wrote with “Armageddon” author Shane Salerno, should therefore be a particularly emotional conclusion. actor Stephen Lang revealed that he cried while reading and called the ending “beautiful” and “touching”.
But the special thing about the finale is that we’re moving away from Pandora. Producer Jon Landau has already revealed it that it goes back to earth. This will be the first time the Na’vi see the alien planet the invaders come fromtrying to conquer their homeland. Don’t worry: the whole movie isn’t set on Earth, it’s just supposed to be “part of the story”.
Journey to Earth should open Neytiri’s eyes
So far, James Cameron has refrained from showing life on Earth in cinema. He then dropped a corresponding opening scene, which he originally directed for “Avatar: Departure for Pandora”, from the film, believing it only unnecessarily delayed the beginning of the actual story. Only in a later published Extended Edition for home cinema (available as a Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray, e.g. at Amazon*) did he re-install these scenes on Earth due to great fan demand, but made it clear that he personally had already started on the starship to Pandora preference.
There’s a reason Cameron now wants to show the rather bleak life on Earth in the cinema, as his business partner and closest comrade-in-arms Jon Landau revealed: “We want the eyes of the public, we want to open Neytiri’s eyes to what exists on Earth.” Neytiri, embodied by Zoe Saldana, should achieve a differentiated view of man. She must realize that not all people are as bad as those representatives of the RDA she has seen on Pandora so far.
Production designer Ben Procter has already revealed that he’s looking forward to making the derelict Future Earth. Neytiri’s journey to our blue planet is one of “the most exciting and moving” stories of the entire saga. It also has a strong environmental message – which also fits with what we already know from the two previous films.
After all, we just learned in Avatar 2: The Way Of Water that Earth is finally going to shit. Humanity no longer wants to conquer Pandora to exploit the planet, it urgently needs her as a new home.
It’s hard to imagine Avatar 5 ending with Pandora forever defended by the Na’vi and the people of her dying homeland left to fend for themselves. That would be pretty grim. We therefore believe that Neytiri’s journey to Earth will also herald peaceful coexistence. The Na’vi warrior and her people will realize that humanity must be saved. Either a way will be found to avert Earth’s fate, or the Na’vi will agree to take human refugees onto Pandora permanently.
“Avatar 5” is still a few years in the future. Disney currently has the saga’s grand finale scheduled for December 20, 2028. The next sequel is coming with “Avatar 3” on December 18, 2024. And of course, “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” is still running in German cinemas.
