The Latin word “discustere” means “to divide”. However, what is meant is the object, not the opposite. This is exactly how discussions are conducted today: as an existential struggle. It is felt that one’s own view is absolutely correct and a different view is necessarily wrong, and therefore an attack on which one must defend oneself.
In Iran, dissidents can earn themselves the official title of “enemy of God” with deadly consequences, and we think that is truly dreadful. But it is just an extreme application of an attitude common among us: I am right, and anyone who says otherwise is an idiot.
It is both difficult and impossible to discuss at this level, that is, to examine an issue objectively. But we don’t want to argue anyway, it’s too tiring for us. We just want to be part of the right team. As soon as a topic comes up, we check how our team feels about it and our opinion is already formed. And the same with the enemy.
These cracks are difficult to repair. Everyone involved should understand that they want to be part of the right team, not because they are part of the right team, but because they do not want to tolerate conflicts. For example, protection measures against infection have saved lives but destroyed economic livelihoods. Both are true. It’s hard to bear. Especially because you can’t scold anymore. Rather, those who have to make decisions at the time are respected.
Do not talk politics with your family. But about the crack it creates. Set an example and talk about how you feel.
