It’s been pretty quiet around the planned “Assassin’s Creed” series on Netflix lately. Now there’s news – but it’s not good. Than Jeff Stuart left the project and so “Assassin’s Creed” is now without the important position of showrunner. Of course, Stuart should be replaced soon, but production of the game adaptation is likely to be delayed.
On the trail of “The Witcher”
It’s been a while since Netflix announced the series anyway. We reported that in October 2020 the streaming giant is planning an entire “Assassin’s Creed” universe in the style of “The Witcher” franchise. After the main series, the animated movie “Nightmare Of The Wolf” and the prequel miniseries “Blood Origin” were also produced for “The Witcher”, with more offshoots to come. And even with “Assassin’s Creed” a main series was initially considered before any spin-offs would follow, or so it was said at the time.
A showrunner was found for this “Assassin’s Creed” main series almost exactly a year later: Jeb Stuart took on the fantasy action project, which also developed the “Vikings” spin-off “Vikings: Valhalla” for Netflix. Stuart also has two major action milestones to his credit: he wrote the scripts for Die Hard with Bruce Willis and The Fugitive with Harrison Ford.
But now Jeb Stuart opened up in an interview with that he is no longer involved in Assassin’s Creed. There has been a change in leadership and the project has moved from Los Angeles to London. There were ambiguities about what vision for the series they wanted to work with, and so they eventually went their separate ways. “I think that’s fair,” Stuart said. “I know it will be great when it comes out.”
The series is still in a very early stage
That doesn’t sound particularly dramatic, but Stuart’s last sentence makes it clear that it probably is could be a long way from having an exact timing for its release. After all, the project is still in its infancy, even though it was announced back in 2020 – actors and directors have to be found, the whole thing has to be shot and now a showrunner is missing.
After all, the historical action hit “Vikings: Valhalla” will be replenished soon: Season 2 will be available on January 12, 2023 Netflix.
