As a rule, Netflix saves the weekly highlights for Friday to focus more attention on selected films or series just in time for the weekend. And with “The Memorable Case of Mr Poe” the most prominent exclusive title of the week is pushed as expected on January 6th. However, the murder hunt for Edgar Allan Poe with Christian Bale has only partly convinced us. the In our opinion, movies will be coming to Netflix next Wednesday.
Although these are not new and not exclusive to Netflix, they offer strong suspense cinema from the first to the last minute. We’re talking “Sicario” and “Sicario 2”, as well as the 90’s cult classic “Leon – The Professional”, leading the ranks of today’s new Netflix releases.
“Sicario 1+2” & “Leon – The Professional”: action meets suspense
Nowadays we associate Denis Villeneuve mainly with his sci-fi highlights “Arrival”, “Blade Runner 2049” and “Dune”. Years earlier he established himself in Hollywood with relatively small but no less captivating thrillers. With “Sicario” he delivered one of the most exciting, darkest cartel thrillers in recent history.
With “Sicario 2” he handed over the direction to Stefano Sollima, but the sequel does not have to hide from the strong first part – and is even more uncompromising in its work. In the end, there was even an FSK 18 rating for it.
And we don’t have to say too many words about “Leon – Der Profi”. Luc Besson’s assassin thriller has stood the test of time and is rightly regarded as one of the ultimate classics of the ’90s.
Jean Reno and Natalie Portman are one of the most iconic movie duos of the decade – and largely responsible for the fact that “Leon – The Professional” not only tops our ranking of the best action movies of all time, but also one of the best gangster movies for us all time. It’s worth putting it on your Netflix watch list, not just if you’ve never seen this masterpiece before. Because “Leon – The Professional” just works time after time.
