In “Knives Out – Murder is a Family Matter,” Daniel Craig first established as private investigator Benoit Blanc and clarified the death of best-selling author Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). The hilariously entertaining crime thriller was so successful at the box office that Netflix took notice and hired director-writer Rian Johnson for a whopping $450 million to direct two sequels.
The first sequel, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, has been available on Netflix since December 23, 2022 – but what’s next for “Knives Out 3”? Since the films do not build on each other, but – like the great role model Agatha Christie – almost completely stand alone, one can only speculate. And that’s where the Muppets come in…
Benoit Blanc in “Muppets: A Knives Out Mystery”?
Because Numerous fans on social media apparently want Benoit Blanc to meet the Muppets in his next adventure. So many fans, in fact, that Rian Johnson was approached by the official Netflix magazine Tudum. “That’s quite a genius joke, I think, and I’ve really thought it through,” Johnson said. “I take the crime genre very seriously, but so does the Muppet genre.”
However, after careful consideration, Johnson came to the conclusion that the two genres, namely crime and muppets, do not necessarily go together: “I think there are very different rules for both. You could do a Benoit Blanc murder mystery with Muppets, but they’d look out of place. Or you can make a Muppet movie with Benoit Blanc, but it feels like a Muppet movie.”
He doesn’t want to compromise on one genre or the other, Johnson continued. But he still promised: “If I ever make a Muppet movie, I just want to make a great Muppet movie.”
In a recent tweet, Johnson similarly summed up his ambivalence again: The idea was very funny and he didn’t want to spoil the fun, but in the end it was just an amusing mind game.
