It is, of course, misleading to think that a night of drinking leaves no trace. But with a few little tips, at least the worst evil can be mitigated: hangovers. Such tricks can be found in abundance on referral sites on the Internet. But which ones are good and which ones belong to the realm of myths and legends?
1. A beer in the morning relieves a hangover
Let’s start with one of the most common hangover tips: A beer in the morning will banish the hangover. Especially young people love it. It must be the placebo. It’s a legend. A hangover is a sign of poisoning, so taking more poison will not help.
2. Consume three tablespoons of olive oil before going out
This is also a popular advice before getting into the nightlife. And that’s true. Pure olive oil may not taste very good, but it actually helps the hangover move more in the realm of a house cat and not an adult tiger.
This is because fat limits the body’s ability to absorb alcohol into the blood. By the way, a similar effect is achieved if you eat fatty foods.
3. Gin, beer, wine – any mess makes a hangover worse
This common assumption is wrong. Or at least not yet scientifically proven. A hangover is mostly caused by the amount, not the drink.
4. Exercise relieves hangovers
Unfortunately this is not true either. Alcohol is broken down in the liver, and it just takes time. Jogging or cycling doesn’t help either. But what’s definitely good is the fresh air. So get out of bed and dive into nature.
5. Enough food in advance
“Having good soil” is what people call a full stomach before drinking. The idea behind this: If you ate more, you could drink more and get less drunk. And even that is true. The more we eat, the longer it takes for the alcohol to take effect. Meanwhile, high-fat and high-carb foods such as pizza or pasta are best suited for “bödele”.
6. Vitamins help
This is logically true – vitamins always help. Alcohol destroys the important ones, which causes the body to fatigue. Vitamin supplements can support the liver. It’s best to take them before you start drinking. That’s a pretty worthless tip if you spontaneously end up in an alley. Fortunately, the Street Parade can be planned quite well.
Vitamins B and C help detoxify the liver. If you don’t want to take supplements, you can also take vitamins naturally. For example, vitamin B is mainly found in animal products such as meat, milk or cheese. Vitamin C is mainly found in fruits and vegetables.
7. Showering relieves hangover
This is not true. Alcohol breaks down in the liver, and even the longest and hottest shower can’t help. By the way, for the same reason you can not drink alcohol by sweating in the sauna. Only five percent of the alcohol is excreted through the skin in sweat, the rest is broken down quite normally.
8. Drink water
Best tip ever and of course absolutely true. Drinking enough water makes sense at any time of the celebration, before, after, or while drinking. Alcohol draws water from the body. A glass of water after each drink would be best. This avoids the risk of the body becoming dehydrated.
9. Hangover! What is it now?
But even those who follow all these tips and tricks will feel like a night of drinking the next morning. And even if the hangover is already there, there are tricks on how to fight it, at least a little. Here, too, one thing applies above all else: drink plenty of water!
