Is Quaritch no longer a villain in “Avatar 3”? So says actor Stephen Lang

Warning: The following article contains SPOILERS for “Avatar 2: The way of the water“!

In “Avatar: Journey to Pandora,” Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang) was determined to destroy the Na’vi. Finally he died. However, he returns in Avatar 2: The Way Of Water. His memories were loaded into an ‘avatar’, so he is now a Na’vi himself. Despite this, he continues to fight them, remaining downright brutal in the process, obsessed with getting revenge on Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) for his death.

Yet Quaritch’s rough shell crumbles. He learns – also through his son Spider (jack champion) – more about the Na’vi and changes. When he threatens a tribe to find out where the Sullys are, he abandons his plan to kill an innocent woman at his son’s urging. In the end, he just burns down all the residences – still cruel, but a huge step for him. Also in the finale, he is surprisingly hesitant on several occasions, even avoiding killing one of the captured Na’vi children.

Many fans are now convinced that this is not the end of his development. After surviving only because his son Spider saves him, Quaritch could change even further. Precisely because he is now also a stranger among humans, he could gradually continue to accept his Na’vi existence, eventually even ending up on their side and not being a villain.

Stephen Lang: Na’vi-Quaritch has that option

Actor Stephen Lang already knows if Quaritch is heading in that direction. James Cameron has already had the scripts for “Avatar 2” to “Avatar 5” written in their entirety so all the stars know what their characters are going to do. Of course he doesn’t want to reveal that yet, but in an interview with he makes it clear that it is certainly a conceivable option.

While the human version of Quaritch said there would never have been the possibility of such a change, for the Na’vi version it is certainly up for debate. Quaritch realized he had to adapt to the circumstances. Everything is possible with thisso long im -Interview.

Jake and Neytiri now as Avengers?

It could mean an interesting reversal of the conflict between him and the Sullys in Avatar 3. If Quaritch turns away from the humans to help the Na’vi and his son, he won’t be welcomed with open arms by them – especially not by Jake and Neytiri.

In the end, the parents will blame Quaritch for the death of their son Neteyam (Jamie Flatters). So it is quite possible that they themselves are out for revenge. Neytiri in particular is unlikely to be able to forgive, and perhaps make it her life’s work to get revenge on her son’s killer.

In any case, the further development of Quaritch offers interesting possibilities for “Avatar 3”. That he’s just the bad guy for the third time seems hard to imagine – especially since with General Ardmore (Eddie Valk) in “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” a character has already been established, which is likely to slip into this role in the near future.
