It was yesterday. On December 22, 2022, the two millionth movie ticket for “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” was sold in Germany. That’s a record. In the 2020s, no movie sold two million movie tickets so quickly. “James Bond – No Time To Die” did the same on the ninth day after the start, but a little slower.
Other figures show how impressively “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” runs. Significantly more people poured into the cinemas on both Thursday and Wednesday (December 21 and 22) than on the respective days of the week before – and those were the opening days after all.

“Avatar: The Way Of Water” is fast becoming a cross-country skier
The fact that a movie grows like this in its second week of the week is unusual, especially for a blockbuster, and a strong indication that “Avatar: The Way Of Water” is going to be the long-running hit in this country that those involved hope.
But the sequel to “Avatar: Aufbruch nach Pandora” is not only so successful in Germany. In France, the film has only really started after it started a bit more cautiously because of the World Cup for men. France is now the third largest market after North America and China.
The second best Wednesday result of the year is reported from the US itself. However, it is not yet foreseeable how stable the film really is. Since in the US “Avatar 2” only started two days later than in Germany on December 16, there are therefore no comparisons with a previous weekday.
Christmas brakes “Avatar 2”
But you have to be prepared for one thing. If the figures for the cinema weekend are evaluated, it will seem that “Avatar 2” was not stable at all, but collapsed – especially in Germany. That is not unusual, but especially since Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday this year. Saturday is actually the day most people make a pilgrimage to the movies. But hardly anyone goes to the cinema on Christmas Eve (which is why most are closed from noon).
Thus, almost a whole day will be released, which will greatly depress the weekend result of “Avatar 2”. It is therefore not possible to evaluate the figures for next weekend. The following days should then compensate for this. When family responsibilities are settled on Monday, December 26 and Boxing Day, many head back to the movies. They also do this after the holidays, when many go on holiday before the turn of the year.
Since the weekend after that another slump is imminent, since December 31, 2022 is of course also a Saturday and also largely no longer a day to go to the cinema, when further classifying the German figures from “Avatar 2” and compare the weekends.
Nevertheless, one can currently state: “Avatar 2” has been a mega hit so far, incredibly popular, especially in Germany. Only the future can tell whether this will continue in the long run and collect the supposedly necessary $2 billion globally over many weeks.
