Who doesn’t dream of a beautiful wedding? An essential part of these celebrations is the wedding dress, which should catch everyone’s attention when the bride makes her grand entrance. Selection shows that you can trust the tried and tested. “This year you often see classic elements in bridal cuts such as heart-shaped necklines, off-the-shoulder models or voluminous flared skirts with big trains,” says Rahel Hess, owner of Hera bridal shop in Zurich. I look at the trends of this year. You’re looking for lace, trim and sparkle in vain. “Everything revolves around clear lines.”
«Simple and dramatic»
Hess likes to describe, with a smile, “simple and dramatic”, the style that is currently in high demand for bridal gowns. “Because in addition to the classic elements, it’s clear to me that very voluminous shapes are popular, but the fabrics are kept ‘simple’.” According to Hess, the focus is on impressive and heavy-looking fabrics that make the bride look so glamorous. “Clothes are usually made from a single material. It is very different from the romantic French style, where lace is often combined with tulle.”
According to the expert, popular and contemporary elements are also cutouts, bodices or Carmen collars. “Especially when garments are made from a single fabric such as mikado, satin silk or silk crepe, they look incredibly eye-catching.”
If someone likes to be more fun and romantic, 3D appliques and flowers are a great trend right now that can be found in many models. The same is true here: “Often the entire dress is made from the same fabric, with no cuts.”
focus on silk
When it comes to fabrics, one main character clearly stands out: “Mikado silk embodies very well the ‘simple-dramatic’ trend I specifically call it. It’s heavy, bulky, rather stiff, not runny, and looks very stylish.» Mikado silk is mostly seen in plain and classic cuts, without too many “frills”, which makes it elegant.
Stays in the beige range
If we talk about colors, it is clear what prevails. “We’re sticking with the old ways: Most dresses are still ivory or ivory, and shades of blush or beige aren’t uncommon.” Other colors would not go unnoticed, according to Hess.
Because wedding dresses that are popular today have few details, veils are the perfect accessories to complete the look. “They look sexy with the backless and can be incredibly eye-catching with floral appliqués or lace edging,” emphasizes the bridal shop owner. Detachable puff sleeves, large bows, fancy headbands or colorful earrings are other bold accessories that look great with a simple dress, according to the expert.
