Will “Wednesday” get a second season or not? That says the boss of the Netflix series

“Wednesday” has become an absolute mega hit on Netflix in record time. The series about the offspring of the cult Addams family (played here by Jenna Ortega) has only been on the streaming service for three weeks, but has already been watched by its users for more than a billion (!) hours and was able to catapult past this year’s true crime success “Dahmer” to number 3 of the most successful Netflix series ever (only “Squid Game” and the fourth season “Stranger Things” fared even better).

Still, Netflix hasn’t green-lighted a second “Wednesday” season yet, even though an extension with the fabulous numbers is likely just a matter of form. This is also apparent from new statements by Peter Friedlander. The boss of fictional Netflix series in the US and Canada also did not want to confirm the second season, he explains in an interview with the American trade magazine but tellingly that in the case of “Wednesday” he very confident to be.

Why is Netflix waiting so long?

Even if a confirmation of new episodes looks decidedly different, anything else after these words would be a bitter disappointment at the latest. But why is Netflix actually hesitant with such an announcement? Here Friedlander himself brings some light into the darkness with some other statements.

To ensure that Netflix actually achieves a success (and therefore holds on to it), not only short-term peaks in demand are decisive, but also long-term interests. This also explains why the streaming service pulled the plug on several series in 2022 (including “Fate: The Winx Saga”, “Goosebumps at Midnight” and most recently “Warrior Nun”), even though they are in the top 10 most streamed content today :

Also with “Wednesday” one now wants to observe how long the series really lasts and analyze exactly what made it so quickly the “cultural phenomenon” that it is according to Friedlander (here he leads the internet hype around Wednesday’s now legendary dance scene and the many people currently dressing as Wednesday Addams).

While there’s still a little lingering doubt about the future of “Wednesday,” the ratings are so phenomenal even after three weeks that it would be a huge surprise if Netflix didn’t officially announce the second season soon. Rather, we can imagine someone waiting that long to work on further plans right away and coming around the corner with a bigger announcement that will immediately include even more seasons (the creators already have corresponding plans) or could potentially include offshoots – even though this is pure speculation at this point.
