“Alita: Battle Angel” is said to have cost a whopping $170 million, making the outrageous sci-fi comic the most expensive manga movie adaptation of all time and one of the most expensive movie productions in 2019. But even if the movie freed its viewers from the cinema with a small preview of future adventures and introduced Edward Norton as the mysterious villain Nova at the end, things didn’t look good for a sequel so far.
The reason for this may have been the global box office result, as the costly implementation of the cult template was able to gross just over $400 million globally – meaning the movie wasn’t a loss-making venture, but ticket sales weren’t high enough to immediately to launch a sequel.
“Alita: Battle Angel 2” is alive!
Yet “Alita: Battle Angel 2alive! After “Alita” and “Avatar” producer Jon Landau recently rekindled hope, both directors appear to be Robert Rodriguez but also producer James Cameron to keep believing in a continuation of the ambitious sci-fi project.

There are already plans for “Alita: Battle Angel 2”
“Alita: Battle Angel” was never planned as a standalone film, but was made as a trilogy from the start. Back in 2018, director Robert Rodriguez said in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment that he received more than 600 pages of notes from James Cameron, who abandoned the project in favor of the “Avatar” sequels.
And the director also mentioned to us in an interview his vision for the future of “Alita: Battle Angel”, which goes way beyond a movie: “We just got to know the heroine and her world, and with a next movie you could be in a way to reach a new level with her, where many exciting worlds are waiting to be discovered.”
Could the success of “Avatar 2” spark the sequel?
Time will tell how seriously the two great directors really took their virtual blood oath. In any case, James Cameron could have a rock with the mouse studio, which now also owns the “Avatar” and “Alita” studio 20th Century Fox and which is certainly based on a long-term collaboration with the successful director could be interested. Perhaps he can use this success to finally launch the sequel to the sci-fi blockbuster.
