Yesterday, December 8, 2022, DC fans had a lot to digest: “Wonder Woman 3” is dead, at least for now, “Man Of Steel 2” and “Black Adam 2” seem to be on edge and even Jason Momoa could give up the trident after Aquaman 2 and switch to another DC role. At least that is what the extremely reliable American trade magazine The Hollywood Reporter reports. But what does the man who (along with Peter Safran) is responsible for the emerging unrest at DC actually say about this: James Gunn?
In a series of tweets, the directors of ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ and ‘The Suicide Squad’ commented on the report – but without going into specifics. His main statement: “Because of the story yesterday in the Hollywood Reporter: Some of it is true, some of it is half true, some of it isn’t, and some of it we haven’t decided whether it’s true or not.”
In further tweets, Gunn again asked for patienceas he’s done a few times in direct exchanges with fans on social media: “Building the next decade or so of stories takes time and we’re just getting started,” says Gunn.
He also spoke of an “inevitable transition phaseas we move towards a cohesive narrative in films, series, animation and video games.” However, the drawbacks of this transitional phase would not outweigh the creative possibilities build on what worked for DC and fix what didn’t.
“We know we won’t make everyone happy all the timebut we can promise you that everything we do is in service of the story and the DC characters that you love and have loved all our lives,” concludes Gunn.
So what does this mean for DC fans? As we wrote in our in-depth article yesterday, we should of course brace ourselves for some major and minor changes.
As Gunn himself says, at least the thrust of the THR article is correct, even if not all the details are correct. And he himself writes about a transitional phase, about correcting certain things and that you cannot make all fans equally happy.
In concrete terms, this could mean, for example, that you still shoot an “Aquaman 3” if the second part is just as successful as the first “Aquaman” ($1.15 billion!). Or that you find a new director for “Wonder Woman 3” who completes the story of the superheroine together with Gal Gadot.
As James Gunn writes: For now, we’ll just have to wait and see…
