James Cameron has been involved in the world of Avatar since the mid-1990s. At that time, he wrote the first draft of the fantasy blockbuster, which came out in 2009 and became the highest-grossing film of all time. Now, with “Avatar: The Way Of Water”, the highly anticipated sequel is just around the corner. And if the first votes are to be believed, then the class of the already revolutionary predecessor has not only been reaffirmed, but even surpassed:
As has been known for some time, James Cameron is planning three more sequels after “Avatar 2”. He even recently commented that “Avatar 6” and “Avatar 7” would also be possible, but without him in the director’s chair. However, there is one “Avatar” adventure that we will definitely never get to see, even though the script has long been finalized. Sam Worthington (Jake Sully) and Zoe Saldana (Neytiri) are talking to that now revealed. This is a scenario that combines “Avatar” and “Avatar 2”. In other words, an “Avatar 1.5”.
In the interview, Sam Worthington stated: “James Cameron gave us a screenplay for ‘Avatar 1.5’ that he wrote, covering the period between ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’. He wrote a whole screenplay.” When asked by Sam Worthington when the movie would be made, Cameron replied, “No, no, that’s just something I’ve been writing for the past year to give Jake Sully’s backstory.”
Zoe Saldana is the screenwriter for Avatar 1.5
The fact that James Cameron is writing a screenplay for a movie he never really wants to make shows how passionate the master director is about the subject of “Avatar”. We’ll probably never find out if this background information on the characters, to which the “Avatar” actors were made available exclusively, could have been of interest to the moviegoing audience – unless James Cameron decides to make the script available to the public. According to Zoe Saldana, a copy is currently in his possession.
“Avatar: The Way Of Water” will be released in German cinemas on December 14, 2022 and then we’ll see if the script for Avatar 1.5 helped the stars further develop their characters.
Even more “Avatar” in January – but not in theaters
But even if the script was never published, there’s still a way to dive back in time between “Avatar” and “Avatar 2.” A three-part comic book series called “Avatar: The Blood of Pandora” will launch on January 10, 2023, covering exactly this period between the two films. Volume 2 and Volume 3 will be released on February 28 and March 28 respectively.
