After launching a new zombie (and bank robber) franchise for Netflix, Army Of The Dead, Justice League executive Zack Snyder now wants to do something similar in the sci-fi genre — nothing short of his personal ” Star Wars”. In fact, he pitched his new movie “Rebel Moon” to star wars studio Lucasfilm as a dark “Star Wars” spin-off – which ultimately failed to materialize after Disney acquired the company.
Now Snyder has made it his own thing for Netflix, which he’s been working on for months and has now reached a major milestone. The recordings of “Rebel Moon”, which started in April 2022, were completed last weekend. To mark the occasion, after several impressive concept photos and set videos, Snyder now has the first real clip on his favorite social media platform published and also euphorically thanked the cast and crew for their cooperation. The video has since been shared on other channels:
Although the clip is only 15 seconds long, it already gives a pretty good idea of the film’s aesthetic and visual language, which no doubt brings to mind popular Snyder hits like “300” to remind. In the finest Snyder high gloss super slow motion, the finest particles play almost meditatively around Doona Bae’s face.
The South Korean, known for Park Chan-Wook’s revenge hit “Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance” and the Netflix series “Sense8”, among others, is part of a huge, illustrious ensemble that also includes “Sons Of Anarchy” biker Charlie Hunnam belongs, Deadpool villain Ed Skrein, Shazam! wizard Djimon Hounsou, Saw victim Cary Elwes, Ant-Man villain Corey Stoll, Justice League member Ray Fisher, Sucker Punch fighter Jena Malone, Game Of Thrones star Michiel Huisman and Hollywood legend Anthony Hopkins. The latter will lend his signature voice to a sentient combat robot.
That’s what “Rebel Moon” is about
Meanwhile, Sofia Boutella (“The Mummy,” “Star Trek Beyond”) stars as a young woman with a mysterious past. In “Rebel Moon”, she is sent by the desperate populace of a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy to gather warriors on neighboring planets to oppose the armies of the tyrannical regent Balisarius (Ed Skrein). The ‘Star Wars’ DNA still shows up in this story.
It is still unclear when “Rebel Moon” will appear on Netflix. After shooting, however, a sci-fi adventure of this magnitude would first have to involve complex post-production, so we’d expect the film to be released in the second half of 2023 at the earliest, maybe even early 2024.
