Movie flops are always particularly bitter when stories that are clearly based on several parts cannot be told to the end – this was the case with “The Golden Compass”, the film adaptation of the first part by Philip Pullmans, which hit theaters in 2007 popular fantasy novel trilogy “His Dark Materials”.
Although the start of the planned series still managed to gross a solid $372 million at the box office worldwide, with a production budget of a whopping $180 million, to which a huge advertising budget has yet to be added, this was not enough to become a real success booked. Most importantly, however, the film fell far short of expectations in the important US market, grossing just $70 million. Despite the international numbers and a prominent cast of Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman and Eva Green, the film adaptations of the other two parts of “His Dark Materials” were canceled. But that wasn’t the last word…
More success with the series “His Dark Materials”.
The story about the young orphan girl Lyra, who gets to the bottom of the disappearance of countless children in a magical parallel world and comes across a conspiracy that reaches into the highest circles, remains unfinished on the big screen, but in 2019 people dared to to make another adjustment attempt – with much more success! Not only was the His Dark Materials series much more positively received than the movie version, but there was also enough interest to produce three seasons, covering the entire book and bringing the story to a close.
So, three years after the start of the series, the grand finale is already upon us – and it’s already happening in Germany: the third and final season of His Dark Materials begins today, December 6, 2022 on Sky, paralleling the US broadcast on HBO. Every Tuesday there are two episodes of the eight-part season on the Sky streaming service WOW and on Sky Q on demand in English original with German subtitles (besides the first two seasons are still available). The dubbed version is expected to be delivered in February 2023.
