“Avatar 6” and “Avatar 7” could be coming – but James Cameron already has some bad news for his fans

Fans are already holding their breath when it finally happens: “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” is coming to cinemas. 13 years after “Avatar,” James Cameron returns to Pandora and finds himself in a sort of competition with himself, as 2009’s fantasy adventure made Cameron the highest-grossing film of all time. Whether “Avatar 2” will surpass its predecessor remains to be seen. In any case, the 190-minute spectacle is eagerly awaited – and you can already be sure that the images offered there will be the pinnacle in the blockbuster sector for a long time (until the start of “Avatar 3”).

It has long been known that after “Avatar 2”, James Cameron is planning three more parts, with the shooting of “Avatar 3” already nearing completion. So if the second part fails to perform commercially – which is unthinkable – we can expect at least one more sequel. However, if the expected success materializes and “Avatar” remains a true blockbuster through part 5, the franchise could continue beyond that. in the Interview with Anyway, James Cameron has now confirmed that he also has very early plans for “Avatar 6” and “Avatar 7”, though he can’t imagine directing it himself:

“I’d be 89 by then. Obviously I can’t make unlimited ‘Avatar’ movies to gather the energy it takes. I’d have to teach someone how to do it because I don’t care how smart other directors are. They don’t know how to do that.”

A very appropriate point, because James Cameron is not getting any younger. Of course, it would be a disappointment for fans if the creators of “Titanic” said goodbye to the franchise after “Avatar 5” (theatrical release was set for December 20, 2028). That this does not necessarily end well, we already saw in the series “Terminator”. James Cameron directed the first two films, which are now considered milestones in cinema history. Anything beyond that is tolerated or filtered out.

There is still a long way to go before we can talk about the future of the “Avatar” franchise and consider whether it will continue at all beyond “Avatar 3” (theatrical release is scheduled for December 18, 2024) in the event of a commercial failure. For now, we can look forward to Avatar 2, with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver (in a new role!) returning. To get in the mood, check out the latest trailer again here:
